Sen. Chuck Schumer joined forces with local prosecutors yesterday to declare war against auto insurance scam artists, saying the motorized fraudsters were costing New Yorkers a whopping $1 billion a year.
Schumer joined Queens DA Richard Brown in an appeal for new legislation that would make auto insurance fraud a federal crime, punishable by a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and more than $100,000 in fines.

We need to watch this closely. Betcha even money Schumer is onboard to protect these fraudsters. Schumer is sure not gonnna do anything to hurt all his donors and supporters.
These organized crime auto scams involve not only insurance fraud but Medicaid and Mediacre fraud fraud of monstrous dimensions.
Newpapers reported that seven doctors and two lawyers were among 20 suspects arrested when cops smashed yet another million-dollar car- and medical-insurance scam by Russian organized crime rings---- economic terrorists -----that routinely staged accidents and collected on non-existent injuries.
Innocent people died in the staged incidents but none of the economic terrorists have been charged with murder or intent to murder.
During a two-year sting dubbed "Operation Sideswipe," undercover NYPD Detectives infiltrated the crime ring. They were sent to two medical clinics claiming they were injured in a car accident - and then received virtually no care during more than two dozen costly follow-up visits, officials said.
Detectives said the clinics were "set up specifically" by the doctors to handle false injury claims. Authorities said the ring operated primarily out of a Brooklyn law firm owned by Alan Blumen, 30, of Morganville, New Jersey and George Vishnevetsky, 40, of Brooklyn, New York.
Two of the firm's employees recruited "runners" for up to $3,000 to stage accidents, get police reports and file false insurance claims. Two Queens facilities - the First Modern Medical Clinic in Richmond Hill and Lane Medical in Forest Hills - would arrange for "unnecessary" therapy, tests and medical care that was "never received," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. In one staged crash in Queens, motorists and passengers allegedly claimed injuries and damages of more than $130,000.
Thieving Russian emigres keep scamming the USA as Americans pay and pay and pay. Russian-born economic terrorists in America are the worst. They are involved in identity fraud, insurance rip-off scams, massive faked auto accident fraud rings, tax evasion schemes, etc, etc, etc. Some of them got nabbed a few years back holding big jobs in the Bank of NY which they used to launder funny money.
One investment thief looted and ripped-off working class pensioners, and others, then absconded when it came time to pay for his crimes. The Russian economic terrorists are ruthless, sleazy, unprincipled but highly politically-connected cons.
Their crooked activities are doubly disturbing since Russian émigrés land on US soil under very auspicious circumstances. They are treated like royalty, get tax-subsidized government grants, tax-subsidized housing, and have job set-asides waiting for them......jobs that are taken from taxpaying born-Americans. A TV news segment showed one of these young Russian freeloaders, who was a trained engineer, picking up welfare checks and food stamps while his wife was dolled up in an expensive fur, lolling around getting her hair done courtesy of US taxpayers.
It is an outrage that taxpayers are subsidizing Russian economic terrorists entree into America, and are footing the bills to enable their crooked activities. These economic terrorists are politically savvy and their politics are corrupt and quite Byzantine.
We should be very concerned about their American presence which is concentrated in Brighton Beach, New York......in a place nicknamed Little Odessa. These economic terrorists are an evil threat to every American freedom and to American financial stability every minute they are in our country and are allowed to breathe the fresh air of free America.
We already have strong laws against this type of thing that are not being enforced. That makes Schumer's bleatings even more worrisome. Schumer's never shown a previous proclivity to protect law-abiding Americans.
What, exactly, is the rationale for making it a federal crime? Isn't New York State capable of handling law enforcement without bringing the Feds into it?
this, unfortunately, immediately entered my mind as the most plausible motive.
I agree.
1. We know that Schumer is always looking out for himself.
His Car Stolen, Schumer Assails E-ZPass By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS2. We know that Schumer's wife is New York City Transportation Commissioner Iris WeinshallWASHINGTON, March 10 (AP) Senator Charles E. Schumer's car was stolen Saturday outside his family's apartment building in Park Slope, Brooklyn. And now he is upset with E-ZPass officials for billing him and his wife $23 for a new transponder after the theft of the car, a 2001 Ford Taurus.
"When we called E-ZPass to notify you of the theft, we were shocked to learn that we were responsible for a $23 charge for the cost of the tag," Mr. Schumer wrote to the executive director of the E-ZPass office in Lower Manhattan.
3. We know Schumer likes to have his picture in the papers, everyday, if possible.
He might be running out of ideas for "issues" to be "concerned" about.
Or maybe his proposal helps his wife or someone close to her in the Transportation Department of NYC.
Schumer should stop trolling for votes and do something important. I was hoping that Schumer would be busy trying to get a Constitutional Amendment going.
Schumer and his senatorial partners in slime objected to Bush's judicial nominees because they would have been placed in lifetime positions.
Schumer should help us get over this "lifetime position" hurdle.
He should work on an amendment could limit federal judges to 15 or 20 year terms.
Then again, my suspicion is that Schumer wants to be on the Supreme Court some day. In that case he would not want terms for judges.
Disgusting might describe it.
Your taxes at work
I guess this is how they seek "political asylum" in the good ol' USA (/sarcasm).....by ripping off taxpayers.
