Chilean firm says new mushroom tastes like meat
A Chilean mushroom company claims to have developed a mushroom that tastes exactly like meat.
Funghi Chile Ltd says sales have tripled since launching the new mushroom which is being sold as a healthier alternative to meat.
Chief executive Ricardo Sanches told Las Ultimas Noticias online: "If you try one of our mushrooms blindfolded you will never know if you ate real meat or not. It tastes 100% like meat.
"Our mushrooms give you the pleasure of tasting meat without the fat or cholesterol of the real thing."
At the moment the mushrooms are sold only in Chile but the company says it hopes to start exporting soon.

This article fails to mention that the only reason we like the taste of mushrooms to begin with is because the same taste buds we use for meat are the same for mushrooms.

This could only fool me if the mushroom is tough and chewy.

My brother-in-law, who is a naturalists, once found us chicken mushrooms in the Adirondacks, which grow on the sides of trees only after a summer rain. We fried them up with oil and some with breadcrumbs, and, I'll be d*mned, they tasted just like chicken! True story.

Portobello mushrooms make for a good sandwich.

Once, in 5th grade, I found a couple of elephant ear mushrooms growing on a log crossing a creek, took them home, breaded and fried them. They were great, but I can't say whether they really tasted like elephant ears.

Yep. Grilled portobellos make a great substitute for steak, tastewise.

I was wondering if anyone would get that reference...

I won't be impressed unless they can simulate stingray or seagull.

Most all 'shrooms I have eaten have been soaked in beef juice.
They are a side item to steak. I guess I don't know what they taste like by themselves.
To: Riley
Oh yeah, I was expecting it.
Badger, badger, badger, etc....

Reminds me of a book by Piers Anthony called "Omnivore". Anyone ever read it. Kinda cool Sci-Fi.
