A fine tribute. I don't intend to get off-topic, and I'm sure this has been asked more than a million times on FreeRepublic, but how does one go about sending American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan "Fan mail" including phone cards and nonfood items/ or just postcards? Are there contact addresses to send such correspondence? Again, please forgive the question, yet I sure would like to write to the troops and express my gratitude for their remarkable service.

Beautiful!
Thank you, PKM.

My Grandfather was a soldier in the Great War
He knew of sacrifice and what's worth fighting for.
My father sailed upon a ship, North Seas, Korea bound
Another US soldier, another war had found.
Then came a time for me, a sense of duty deep inside
To serve as others had, for freedom, lived and died.
Freedom is not free, the cost is high, and yet
There are those we will never meet, who stand and pay that debt.

Wasn't prepared for the strong emotion when I went to this link. Cannot imagine how hard it is for small children with their parents in the military and deployed. Real tearjerker.

Check out this site:
Books For Soldiers for contact info for troops who would like books - but I'm sure would appreciate letters and anything sent to them. Be sure to check out Operation Forgotten Soldier in the forum.

Outstanding recommendation. Thank you! It's humbling to think something as simple as a book could bring a degree of happiness, and here I sit with a hot pizza which I had delivered. May I think twice before I ever complain about how rough I've got it.
