Washington U.S. Senator Jon Corzine (D-NJ), Chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), endorsed Kentucky State Senator Daniel Mongiardo M.D. today and hailed his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. The full text of Senator Corzine's statement appears below.
"Doctor Dan Mongiardo is a man who has dedicated his life to helping others and we are delighted to have him running for the U.S. Senate in Kentucky," said Corzine. "Dan is known for his tremendous energy and passion and he is recognized by many for his hard work in the state Senate to improve access to affordable health care for those who have fallen through the cracks of the system," said Corzine.
"The United States Senate and the people of Kentucky need someone like Doctor Mongiardo who will respond to the crisis we face in light of higher health insurance premiums and the rising number of uninsured. They do not need to return a Senator who instead supports the status quo," added Corzine.
"Whether it is fighting for more and better jobs for Kentuckians, improving health care or standing up for education and demanding the resources Kentucky's public schools need to succeed, Dr. Mongiardo will bring the same compassion he shows daily in healing others to his work in the United States Senate. Dr. Dan's candidacy is great news for the United States Senate and even better news for the people of Kentucky. With Dr. Dan running, we feel confident in our chances to win back Wendell Ford's Senate seat and as such, it is our strong hope that we can avoid a Democratic primary. Dr. Dan is the real deal."

Weird. I guess none of their stronger candidates are getting in.

With Dr. Dan running, we feel confident in our chances to win back Wendell Ford's Senate seat and as such, it is our strong hope that we can avoid a Democratic primary. Ah, but that's the problem, and the exact reason the DSCC is intervening: There IS a Democrat primary. According to the Secretary of State's website, that perennial candidate, David Williams (not to be confused with the State Senate president of the same name) is running for the Dem nomination. He's crazy, yet he has managed to win the Dem nomination in the past, such as the 2nd congressional district's nomination in 2002 (Congressman Lewis would defeat him handily, winning in excess of 70% of the vote). Bunning, already in a strong position as the incumbent and with the recent GOP victories, would be a shoo-in if Williams got this nomination, which, given his more familiar sounding name, he has a very good chance of doing.

I guess George Clooney doesn't have any uncles in Kentucky.

A state senator is their only hope against Bunning?
Hell, Corzine might as well run me as the Democratic Candidate!

The GOP should target Schumer in 2004 and Corzine in 2006, along with Hillary.

We've got no hope of beating Schumer in 2004 unless Rudy runs, and he would prefer to run against Hillary in 2006.

I can't believe Corzine made all that jack on Wall Street. He is such a doofus.

Disgusting, isn't it. I left ny and am in NV now and hope the Nev GOP whips Reid's arse in 2004.

State Treasurer Brian Krolicki is thinking of going after Reid - Do you think Krolicki would be formidable?

I dunno - Reid is the senior senator and admittedly has a good 'rap.' Nevada, despite the nuke depository, is Dubya country (more so by the fact that LV seems to be a fetish of the terrorists). I can see Reid losing especially on strong Dubya coat-tails. This is a coin-toss really, though I can definitely see it happening if the dynamics are right.
As opposed to Schumer or Corzine losing, which even Dubya coattails can't necessarily do.
