I love to here Ted Williams say "Let me ax you, Greta...." as well. It's so cool that he doesn't try to lose his accent.

Bush Installs Pickering on Appeals Court
President Bush Installs Charles Pickering on a Federal Appeals Court, Bypassing Democrats

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Jan. 16 — President Bush bypassed Congress and installed Charles Pickering on the federal appeals court Friday, opening an election-year fight with Democrats who had stalled the nomination for more than two years.

Bush installed Pickering by a recess appointment, which avoids the confirmation process. Such appointments are valid until the next Congress takes office, in this case in January 2005.

Pickering, a federal trial judge who Bush nominated for a seat on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, has been waiting for a confirmation vote in the Senate.

"I'm grateful to the president for his continued confidence and support," Pickering told The Associated Press from his home in Mississippi. "I look forward to serving on the 5th Circuit."

Democrats have accused Pickering of supporting segregation as a young man, and pushing anti-abortion and anti-voting rights views as a state lawmaker.

They also have said they wouldn't be able to trust him to keep his conservative opinions out of his work on the federal appeals court.

The 5th Circuit handles appeals from Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana, and the federal judges on that circuit have been trailblazers on desegregation and voting rights in the past.

Pushing for Pickering's confirmation last year, Bush said, "He is a good, fair-minded man, and the treatment he has received by a handful of senators is a disgrace. He has wide bipartisan support from those who know him best."

Although I am opposed to President Bush's amnesty proposal, I was indeed talking in jest. And I'm glad you picked up on it; it's so darned easy to be misunderstood around here lately!

It isn't a great thing, but it is better than mass deportations, which is just not practical unfortunately.

" Careful what you wish for. Just keep in mind that such a precedent would then be in place for any recess appointments that they make in the future as well."

I know, but perhaps it is time for this to happen. After all, confirmation would still require a majority vote. And after all, someday the republicans will get too big for their britches and need to be cut down to size.

You know what? With the way the blacks and their leaders treat this President, I don't think he owes them much. They had their chance and they blew it. Booing him yesterday at the King tomb may have been the breaking point for Bush. I wouldn't blame him one bit. Besides that, Pickering is NOT a racist. Pickering has a lot of black supporters in MS. He is pro-life and that's the real issue for the RATS! Period.

"so all weekend the Dems get to trash Pickering, than Bush can address the issue of judicial obstruction during his SOTU speech. Brilliant strategery!"

Yep! Bush just came into the libs quaint little campground in Iowa and helped himself to the fire poker and poked their campfire to give the fire a stir.

The libs will go beserk and they will continue to display how out of touch the left is and many moderates and level-headed dems will notice and change party or votes to conservatives. Classic Bush politics.
