As I said before, smart politics. It's smart politics, but it's not for "holding the conservative base" because of the amnesty proposition.
It's to influence the outcome of the caucus vote on Monday.

Democrats have accused him of supporting segregation as a young man, and pushing anti-abortion and anti-voting rights views as a state lawmaker. They also have said they wouldn't be able to trust Pickering to keep his conservative opinions out of his work on the federal appeals court.
I love it!!! LOL

Does anyone know - will Jusge Pickering draw a salary? Can't get the source now, but I believe recess appointees do not get paid. Of course he'll get paid. I don't know where you heard that.
It is a valid constitutional appointment to a job that has a pay scale.
To: DocCincy
Well, I haven't been very enthusiastic about Pres. Bush lately, especially given the amnesty proposal, but I gotta give him credit here. This is the right way to deal with the Democrats.

One of the reasons the President has refrained from making recess appointments is that the appointees themselves, e.g., Estrada, REFUSED to accept such an appointment.
WHY?
1.) The appointment is TEMPORARY, i .e., it ends at the conclusion of the President's first term [Of course, this underscores the importance of making sure that President Bush gets re-elected!]
2.) Recess appointees can NOT earn a salary for the tenure of their temporary assignment, i.e., they must work for FREE (OUCH!)!
Thank you President Bush for making this appointment; thank you Judge Pickering for accepting it!!

They did one the other day for Howard Dean losing his temper. Sheesh already.
But this one is good, but I saw it on FR before I got the email alert! ;-)

How dare the President appoint Pickering a few days before Martin Luther King day! Pickering is a KKK-loving racist Damn, you're right! Such insensitivity on Bush's part could seriously cut into his share of the black vote. :)
To: HenryLeeII
I wonder if this is his way of throwing some red meat to conservatives after his immigration proposal didn't go over so well?Nah, it's his response to Ted Kennedy's speech the other day :-)
