DEM PRIMARIES BECOME OPPOSITION RESEARCH WAR
Drudge Report ^

The "political black arts" -- those nasty tidbits that campaigns euphemistically call "opposition research" -- is at the center of an intense debate among Democrats this year, the NEW YORK TIMES is planning to report in Page Ones on Friday, newsroom sources tell DRUDGE.
How much of the research should be used?
And are inter-party candidates inflicting too much damage on each other, leaving an eventual nominee wounded and weakened in a fall showdown with President Bush?
At the center of the maelstrom, Democrats say, is a 36-year-old aide to Gen. Wesley Clark, "a frenetic, colorful and, some contend, devious" communications strategist named Chris Lehane, the TIMES will report.
Lehane, a veteran of Al Gore's 2000 campaign and the Clinton White House, has emerged as Clark's secret weapon.
Now, Lehane has become a target in a fight among Democrats about whether opposition research is going too far. With Clark rising in the polls in New Hampshire and Howard Dean facing a spate of negative news reports.
"He's doing what he does, and what he learned quite well in war rooms and hard-fought campaigns," said one Democrat who works for a rival campaign. "It's just that right now, he's doing it inside the family, as opposed to across the fence. And so it's received differently. He's spilling blood in our house."

Wesley Clark is surrounded by clintonoids. But I expect a lot of this opposition research--mostly on Howard Dean--is coming from hillary clinton. She's the only one with the clout to get this stuff out every day through the liberal media.
The New York Times has been noticeably laggard in printing all this hillary propaganda. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't. But the chief outlets have been the Daily News, Newsweak, Time, the Boston Globe, Reuters, AP, CNN, and the networks. The Times has been relatively neutral so far in the fight among the candidates.
Maybe this story shows a bit of anti-hillary tilt, which is interesting. Although the way this article starts, as summarized by Drudge, it seems determined to associate Lehane with Clark and Gore before it mentions clinton.

What some of us did to expose Bill and Hillary, however, was out of bounds according to both democrats, like Chris Lehane, and newspapers like the New York Times.

That Clark is using Clinton-Gore operatives may partly explain why he's been nastier than Dean of late.
Clark is claiming that the Republicans are the ones who have publicized his Congressional testimony from late 2002 and claims they are distorting what he said. Did the Republicans really have anything to do with that coming to light, or was it his Democrat rivals?

Maybe it is Carville's seed, Chris Lehane.

I have been thinking that maybe it's time to do a little opposition research on John Edwards. I'm thinking about some of those injury court cases that he did and wondering if there would be anything interesting lurking in the court records. It would be worth a look see, if there is someone in his home state.

Well, Chrissie Lehane has no scruples as we know. He has already switched sides during this Presidential election cycle, going from the Kerry campaign (where he was fired) to the Clark campaign. The mere fact that he is now working again for the Clintons speaks volumes. What will he do to help improve on Wesley Clark's character flaws?

"...wondering if there would be anything interesting lurking in the court records." Well, for starters, John Edwards rarely even voted in an election prior to running for public office. That was exposed during his Senate campaign against my friend Lauch Faircloth.

His most famous case was the little girl who got her intestine sucked out by a swimming pool drain. The owner of the pool had allowed the pool drain to be unprotected without a cover. At the time, it was one of the largest awards ever given. Edwards didn't really do that much, the sympathy was with the little girl and her family.
