Gaza mourns woman bomber

Thousands took part yesterday in the funeral of Reem Salah Riashi, the 22 year old mother who carried out the Erez checkpoint suicide attack that killed four Israeli security officers on Wednesday.

Armed members of Hamas' and Fatah's military wings marched in the funeral procession; and members of Hamas' political leadership were also on hand for the funeral, held in Gaza City's Sheikh Ajlin neighborhood.

It was difficult to identify Riashi family members in the throng of mourners.

Unlike other funerals for suicide attackers, in which mourners praise conspicuously visible family relations for the death of the "holy martyrs"; Riashi family members yesterday chose to keep a low profile at the event.

Some women could be seen at the funeral voicing praise for Reem Salah Riashi, whose action broke a longstanding Hamas taboo against women suicide bombers. But the vast majority of mourners appeared to be uninterested in political causes yesterday.

One relative of the dead woman told Haaretz "the family members do not belong to any organization, and we have come to this funeral to do what any family does - to bury its dead."

He said that the family was stunned by Riashi's deed; some relations even expressed anger that the mother of two young children had been recruited for the attack, he added.

It is no surprise that Hamas collaborated with Fatah the first time it recruited a woman for a suicide attack, Palestinian sources say.

Fatah's involvement preempted the prospect that religious figures who oppose the use of women in such attacks might go public with criticism, they explained.

I was talking about the lady that they got to blow herself up. 9/11 hijack leaders were educated but what about the people with them? Did all the hijackers know they were going to fly into buildings.

Would tend to believe that people that strap bombs on their bodies are not very literate and have been brainwashed over the years that it is somehow wonderful to blow yourself up as long as you kill Israeli's. Don't believe fully literate people go in and blow themselves up to kill a few people. If they did, it is a education system like no other.

The point is, it's not the education level of the person doing whatever. It doesn't take any education to commit terrorism. Or, you can be really smart of about it.

The driving force is islam.. Not poverty or wealth or education.
