[history]
President Bush's political strategists, taking note of the unpopularity of his immigration initiative as reflected in public-opinion polls, expressed confidence yesterday that the proposal will gain support as it is recast as an economic and homeland security issue.
"Once people have had a chance to educate themselves about the proposal and what it does, support for it will grow," said Christine Iverson, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee.

It is EXACTLY what he is doing. You get at least 3 times 3 year "guest worker" cards, at any time you may apply for a green card and then citizenship. Have you actually read or listened to any of this? You are not a very effective RNC shill.

Some fan will tell you that Bush has never hidden his intentions about illegals, later they will tell you he never hid his intentions about a borderless free trade zone from the north of Canada to the tip of Cape Horn.
This experience has been a real learning experience for me regarding the difference between Republican and conservative.

It's difficult to enforce laws when both parties are co-operating in the illegal act. Larger employees, such as Wal-Mart, can be preasured. But smaller employees, like someone paying for yardwork, are outside of all but draconian enforcement measures.
And in this day and age, it is not likely in most communities that the police will be forcing every Hispanic with an accent (or no English at all) to carry papers, or profiling likely illegals. The leftists and media (but I repeat myself) would have a hay day with that one.
Really - the practical ability we have to enforce the current laws is insufficient to drive out the bulk of illegals. Frustrating, but true.
And blaming it all on the illegals doesn't change the dynamics.

I agree with you but those things could be addressed in the legislation along with the problem of anchor babies.
Putting them all on the tax roles will help. But they should be sure that they are not eligible for the EIC.

I forgot to say, I would also like to see a manditory percentage placed in an account that the worker could only access when they returned to their home country. It would give them a sort of nest egg that they could use to start a business or build a home. We have to increase the incentives for them to go home.

The problem of 10 million or whatever illegal immigrants already in our country cannot practically be solved by deporting them. Too many, too entrenched. It would take an effort resembling that used by Hitler to round up the Jews to deport all the illegal immigrants. Ugly, really ugly. LOL, it could be done easily and for far less then most people think.

Other examples of the limits of law enforcement: prohibition and gun laws. If a law is contrary to the interests of all parties actively involved, it won't be reliably followed nor typically enforced.
Frequently, government will engage in education efforts to convince people that some law really is in their interests. That's fine. But it is also another indication that government of the people, by the people and for the people relies on, and extends only so far as, the people decide to respect it.

*President Bush has always wanted Amnesty for Illegal Aliens. Always. **I'd like to think that he would like to provide them a basis for working here legally, and willing to forgive their past in return for their co-operation with a legal framework.
Feel free to think that, but you're arguing the difference between donkeys and burros. Bush really is compassionate and forgiving.
Clinton felt my pain. He will forgive almost anyone anything, if they will come straight, and he will work hard to setup a framework in which that can happen. He holds no grudge against illegal immigrants, only a strong desire to improve a bad situation.
First, he's trying to make a bad situation worse. Second, it's gonna cost the GOP votes. So, whatever internal excuse you're making, whatever it is inside of you that makes you think that rewarding Illegals is a good idea... hold that thought a moment, and think about every other thing you want from a GOP President, Congress, and Senate. Now, think of how much more difficult all of that will be because of this attempt to Amnesty foreign lawbreakers Of course, if you won't come around, and your powers of evil are sufficiently large, he will send the Marines out to capture or kill you, after fair warning.
Sounds like you think President Bush is a fascist.

I'd like to see that percentage be the same as the percentage (approx 8% employee and 8% employer) that citizens and legal residents pay into Social Security and such. This would provide a more level playing field between foreign and resident workers.

"And so I think at the end of the day this immigration announcement was every bit as much a homeland security announcement, because of the extra measures to tighten the borders," the official said. There are no extra measures to tighten the borders but if there are then start enforcing them now to show this is not a all a disgraceful sham. Some US troops on the border would impress me. Would impress the Mexis too and scare many off.

No - not sure where you got that from, Saber.
He said he did. I trust you didn't believe him, did you?

Miss Iverson and Bush need to quit their current jobs and go to work for Manpower or Kelly Girls if they are so interested in matching employees to employers.
Do they really think we are so stupid we buy into stuff like that? Not me!!
To: Marine Inspector
LOL, it could be done easily and for far less then most people think.
Get an SS number database going that employers can access via the internet. Then start enforcing employer sanctions. With no jobs but the offer of a bus ticket home, guess what many Mexicans and Central Americans will do?

If we don't have the gonads to deport en masse then don't legalize these invaders. Let them live as serfs. Let them live in the shadows. Let them live second class. I don't believe in rewarding illegal immigrants who invade my country making the USA into Latin America's flop house.
Reward illegal immigration with amnesty and we will get a lot more of it. Same as when you send white collar criminals to country club prisons for 15 months and you get a lot more white collar crime.

That's what I was thinking too. President Bush has suggested it be sent to the country they come from for their social security, but I think it would be better if they had that amount themselves. They should only be able to access it once they are home.

Cut off the jobs, cut off the welfare, and they'll deport themselves bit by bit.
For the other side of the story, see "Correcting the Record About President Bush's Immigration Proposal":

No, it would not "take an effort resembling that used by Hitler to round up the Jews to deport all the illegal immigrants" (Besides, that is an extremely insensitive comparison). Cut off ALL taxpayer funded services and benefits to illegal aliens while at the same time crack down hard on companies that employ illegal aliens. The illegal aliens can then choose to either stay here and starve or voluntarily return to their countries of origin.

"Once people have had a chance to educate themselves about the proposal and what it does, support for it will grow," said Christine Iverson, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee. Educate themselves??? What a condescending bi%^&!!! Reflects more on her level of education and manners than anything else.
To: Howlin
Once I read a poll that said most people highly favored spending money on education. It also showed that they also highly do not favor spending more in taxes for higher education. Ask the pollsters to ask the people whether they would like to pay more in tax dollars for health care and education for illegal immigrants. You will find radically different answers. All polls are cooked. There is no one out there who asks unbiased questions to people.
