We should build a suspension bridge linking North America and Europe
As we ponder going to the Moon again and to Mars, I started to think of projects we Americans can do that can better our lives and the planet.
I propose a suspension bridge be built starting from St. John's in Newfoundland, Canada terminating in Galway, Ireland with a connecting bridge from Belfast to Scotland and on into Europe. This Atlantic Euro-bridge would have two levels of 8 lanes per level and would be able to accommodate freight trucks, passenger vehicles and possibly a freight and passenger train.
The bridge would pay for itself over time via a toll fee.
The airline industry and the ocean freight industry may not like this mover of people and goods but it would be a boon to mankind and to commerce.
It would also help the economically depressed areas of New Foundland, Ireland and Scotland.

Ok, let's go nuts here: what about an elevator to the moon? Again, all debris from the project gets dumped in France.

Already being built according to Art Bell

That bridge has already been built.Perhaps but no reason to compound matters.
You don't think we will roleback Amerio-socilisim do you?
I'm an eternal optimist where America is concerned, an eternal pessimist when old Europe is the topic.
If Bush didn't why do you think any future president will?
Well, we can only hope but while we're waiting let's put the Bridge Over the River Why on hold.

Were you doing bong hits when you came up with this "idea"? Well, dude, like, what if we had things that like, floated, you know, to hold the bridge up.
Pretty (pfffffft) simple, you know?

re: icebergs: glad you said it. I was wondering the same thing myself.

Single span?
Still easier than the elevator to the Moon.

We should build it from pure unobtainium, from harvested asteroids. That would make it more economically feasible.

Over the Bearing Straits? Will happen sometime in the not to distant years. That will be your bridge to Europa. As to, if I would like to see it done? Nope!
They already have plans to lay a pipeline across the straits I hear. Lots of oil to be had in Siberia.

Build it...then paint a huge bullseye on it, as it will become the number one terrorist target in the world.

A tunnel across the Bering Strait might be technically feasible, but I can't see it becoming economically viable. Nonetheless, here's
S. Berliner's Bering Strait Tunnel page.

We could use surplus nukes to dig that southern border canal pronto. El Paso would not be a big loss, but turn slightly south around San Diego.
