We should build a suspension bridge linking North America and Europe
As we ponder going to the Moon again and to Mars, I started to think of projects we Americans can do that can better our lives and the planet.
I propose a suspension bridge be built starting from St. John's in Newfoundland, Canada terminating in Galway, Ireland with a connecting bridge from Belfast to Scotland and on into Europe. This Atlantic Euro-bridge would have two levels of 8 lanes per level and would be able to accommodate freight trucks, passenger vehicles and possibly a freight and passenger train.
The bridge would pay for itself over time via a toll fee.
The airline industry and the ocean freight industry may not like this mover of people and goods but it would be a boon to mankind and to commerce.
It would also help the economically depressed areas of New Foundland, Ireland and Scotland.

Could we? Should we?Why bother asking?! The U.S. taxpayers can pay for anything! And we can pay for improving Nova Scotia, and Ireland and Scotland and.......

Although I rather like the idea of more Citroen's over here.

I thought of that-plus an overnight motel with parking. A spiral garage like structure can hold lots of cars.

Tolls would pay for it and Americans would benefit from cheap transport costs.

Are you trying to get on the 'just damn' list?
I've seen Discover Channel specials about the proposed transatlantic tunnel, the Russo-Alaskan connector bridge and the Gibraltar suspension bridge, and all are considered massive undertakings for the distant future.
Your project is bigger; and I might as an economist, only warranted by the 'gee whiz' factor.

Why did you think they would not be consulted for their approval?

But what about those crazy Brits driving on the left side of the road... won't they crash into the Americans at the half way point?
To: xJones
Just do it! I feel better already! Money is made to be spent, and if we have to steal it or borrow it, who cares? As long as we all come together and forget about liberty and limited government, we can all go on a drunken spending orgy and worry about the hangover later. Or never!

The more Europeans arriving in this country the better, IMHO.

No. There will be a point in the middle where the lanes cross.

It's alot cheaper to just fly our tanks over there next time we need to interrupt one of their twice-a-century killing sprees.
