CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

POSTED: 3:58 PM EST January 14, 2004

Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

I would lay flat on my stomach and ... He would actually turn me over...Loved the water - could not keep him out of the pool...late night arrival. I got about half a step into the front door when I heard a sound I will never forget - a very deep growl from something big...Sorry to ramble

Ramble? I could talk about dogs all day ;) I read your post to my wife and she laughed.. sounds just like our house! I've crept in on purpose at night w/o turning on the lights just to see if she would catch me. That deep rumbling growl in the dark will definitely send a chill right up your spine. As soon as I call her name I get attacked w/ hugs and kisses. This is my second pit, I think they are the greatest dogs. Great w/ kids, friendly and playful as the day is long, but also great guardians impossible to intimidate.

A BC is going to be a handful after Goldens. They are wonderful, intelligent dogs who are devoted to their owners, but they are VERY high energy and they have to have (1) lots of exercise (2) a job to do, or they will find a job you don't care for, like chewing all the siding off the house.

My Choc Lab works Agility, and Border Collies OWN that sport. Some of the trainers at our center have called her "A Border Collie in a Lab suit." She is a very high energy dog, gets her size from her English conformation sire and her energy from her champion field trial dam. She is hardly ever still. We have mostly gotten used to it, but I still crate her at night (otherwise there would be a running gun battle all night long between her and the three Siamese cats about Who Is Going To Sleep Next to Mom.)

When I put my American Eskimo out on a chain, he is "on guard duty" he will eat up any stranger who comes within his circle of influence. If he is loose with me outside, he is the friendliest dog you can find.

Maybe people with responsibility who follow "Leash laws" don't let their dogs run loose. Guess your idea of "Civilized" comes from the libertarian playbook.

You weren't with the 197th Infantry Brigade at Ft. Benning GA during the 70s, were you?

Your screen name was their unofficial motto.

i dont think a bc would do well under those circumstances. i have a large-enough yard for my 3, but they MUST get lots of exercise, or they'll drive you crazy. FReegards, john

I have always been the type of person cats and dogs like. If a dog is agressive, can stand my ground and the dog will stop and not attack. My friends have three of the dogs listed and they attack the UPS man but just wag their tails when I come over.

Definitely number one would be the Golden Retriever

Not necessarily. I have one who is wonderful (check out my profile page), but I also help out with a Golden Retriever rescue group. There are some mean ones out there, but not many. Due to the popularity of the breed, they are being over bred and poorly bred. The difference is that while a poorly bred golden retriever can bite, I have never heard of one mauling anyone. The breeds listed above will maul someone. They will not stop at one bite.

My Pomeranian must not be aware of the list – he considers Pit bulls and Rottweilers to be his favorite foods. He actually took out a Rottweiler several years ago and tries to attack every Pit Bull he sees.
I always keep him on a leash.

I lost her twice...the second time she came back pregnant. She loved chasing cats. We use to have bird aviaries and cats would come from everywhere...She was the perfect cat deterrent. She could sniff them out, even in the middle of the night.

Sharing an email...

If I didn't have dogs...

1) I could walk around safely barefoot in the dark;

2) My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated;

3) All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of dog hair;

4) When the doorbell rang, it wouldn't sound like the SPCA kennels;

5) When the doorbell rang, I could get to the door without wading thru four or five dog bodies who beat me there;

6) I could sit how I wanted to on the couch without taking into consideration where several little furbodies would need to get;

7) I would not have strange presents under my tree....like dog bones, stuffed animals and have to answer to people why I wrap them up;

8) I would not be on a first name basis with a vet;

9) Most used words in my vocabulary would not be: potty, outside, sit, down, come, no, and leave him/her ALONE;

10) My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates;

11) My purse would not contain things like poop pick up bags and dog treats;

12) I would no longer have to spell the world B-A-L-L and F-R-I-S-B-E-E;

13) I would not buy weird things to stuff into "kongs", or have to explain why I'm buying them, or what a "kong" is;

14) I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside;

15) I would not look strangely at people who think having their ONE dog ties them down too much;

16) I would not have to answer the question why do I have so many dogs from people who will never have the joy in their life of knowing they are loved unconditionally by something as close to an angel as they will ever get. Who else has a friend who considers you the MOST important thing in the whole wide world all the time.

A properly trained dog - whatever the breed - will always follow the "alpha" - hopefully YOU…

Then what does this say about me? The Boogie does pick up on some of my habits …

Yes my pit bull will bite you - do not come charging into my house - he will be hanging on your butt - that's why I love him.

Neat list.

I absolutely agree that the Afghan Hound is the most brainless dog on the planet. Friend of mine used to breed and show them. Nice looking dog if you kept it groomed but otherwise completely worthless. You can't even housebreak them.

You're exactly right, popularity is often the kiss of death. I have even seen an occasional ill-tempered Lab.

I do know of one case where a Golden mauled a child (biting him repeatedly on the face and shoulder) and did a lot of damage, but that is so unusual as to be almost a one-off.

Beautiful and accurate pictures of Golden's. They really do smile.

Mine certainly does! :)

I suspect this is because most dogs that aren't chained ARE contained, either in their owner's dwelling or in a kennel. In either case, access to the dog is much more limited than if a dog is chained.

This is a very misleading statement by the CDC...
