Immigration Policy: Last Straw For Conservatives?
Accuracy In Media ^ | January 13, 2004 | Paul M. Weyrich

Now, however, the President has come up with a policy decision that may cause enough of his coalition to vote for a third party or to stay at home. I believe his re-election is endangered if the race turns out to be close.

Every single e-mail I got focused on the national security aspect of this question. A few also mentioned the abandonment of the rule of law.

Whatever his motivation, he is making the oldest mistake in politics. He is abandoning his base.

The greatest concern of his base is over national security.

It's a deal hombre. All your poor people can come live in the USA

I'm shocked! Shocked I tell ya!

My mild post above regarding GWB and the Pres. of El Salvador was pulled from the little FR knitting circle known as the "Day in the life of Pres. Bush (photos)" thread. This was my first post ever pulled (OK - 1st political post - there was that entire thread regarding a Norwegian man, unsavory acts, and pigs).

Here in Texas we vote by electronic touch screen. How would you "Write-In" someone if the screen does not provide a way to do this?

Poll: Americans oppose immigration fix

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A new poll finds most Americans oppose the idea of illegal immigrants from Mexico being allowed to live and work legally in the United States.

The poll, conducted for ABC News on Jan. 7 -- the same day President George W. Bush announced his new immigration proposal -- through Jan. 11, found 52 percent of the 1,142 American adults queried were oppose to "a program in which illegal immigrants from Mexico would be allowed to live and work legally in the U.S." The number rose to 57 percent when the question was asked about illegal immigrants from countries other than Mexico.

By 67 percent to 35 percent, participants in the survey said immigrants who apply for such a program, should it be created, should be allowed to live and work legally in the United States for "a limited period of time, say six years," rather than "an unlimited period of time."

The survey's margin of error is plus or minus 3 percent.

Americans Worried About Immigration, Oppose Bush Plan

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE ^ | January 14, 2003 | Frank Newport

Majority says immigrants hurt economy

PRINCETON, NJ -- Two-thirds of Americans are convinced that immigration mostly hurts the U.S. economy by driving wages down, and three-quarters say that the United States should not make it easier for illegal immigrants to become U.S. citizens. A majority also opposes the recently proposed Bush administration plan that would allow some illegal immigrants in the United States to stay in this country if they took jobs that citizens did not want.

It was just a not-super-witty quip about being under the control of a machine and having no free will, as in the movie.

Bush needs to go into damage control mode, if it isn't too late. Today alone, I've overheard three different discussions of "Bush has lost his mind." Once at the barber shop, then in Wal-mart, and at church this evening. People are paying attention to this.

"But we seniors will definitely vote for President Bush in November because of the budget he will be submitting.
In the budget he will allow money to "shore up" social security. For that action we thank him and will show him that we appreciate that and appreciate him by giving him our votes."

In other words, you'll sell your country out for economic reasons? We're a long way from the day a revoluationary war commander ordered his own neighborhood shelled, knowing it would cost him his own home, all for the sake of freedom.

No, I bailed on the Republicans several years ago. The Republicans bailed on conservatism as soon as they took over Congress in 1994.

Ah, the gimme generation in PRIME form voting for themselves what they failed to prepare for on their own and shafting Generation X and Generation Y.

In other words, you're a poser of a conservative looking to the loving government to take care of you in retirement. "Shore up" is the same concept as "Lock box" and you do recall who proposed "Lock box" don't you?

Qam1, Xer heads up.

Bush isn't just abandoning his base. By failing to uphold the law, Bush abandoned all American citizens he was elected to serve.

We would vote for Bush regardless of anything because we (my spouse and I) are proud to be republicans and we will always vote Republican.

Do we like President Bush's proposal regarding Illegal aliens? Absolutely NOT, I have been the most vocal of all of you probably in my posts against amnesty for illegal, BUT this is a forum for Republicans to air the issues that they are against and the issues they are for and can support.

Can we change the administration's collective minds? can we change the policies, facing reality my answer would be no, not really. I have called faxed and emailed our representatives including the President's office and nothing changed, he went on to bring up his proposals for the Moon, Mars and Marriage counseling. The big 3 "m"s.

If you all dont want to vote for Bush thats your choice and who I choose to vote for is my business and I choose to vote for Bush.

Thanks for the Ping

Since you already thoroughly dispatched him/her and the thread originally wasn't generational I will hold off on a Xer ping. (Plus I really thought that post was sarcasm and was waiting for the poster to say so, But I guess not)

It's horrible that so called Republicans/Conservatives especially ones who post on this board would think like that. Voting for some one just because they give you the most goodies, That's what a Democrat is suppose to do. And it's scary that as bad as that statement was it's coming from a Senior, The Baby Boomers behind them are 100x worse. Even though it's a biggie at least all the Seniors want is their SS and Medicaid, God only knows what the baby boomers are going to demand.
