"You can't have a war, cut taxes, have the economy in a garbage pail and spend billions going into space," said Dallas Hodgins, a 76-year-old retired University of Michigan researcher from Flint, Mich. "How are they going to pay for all this? I don't see how it's morally justifiable. In Flint, there isn't a school roof that doesn't leak."
Maybe they can ask someone who ISNT a liberal former professor?

The newstory should right out and say:
"Shortly before President Bush raised the topic, we conducted a poll. We found three University professors and we asked them: 'Do you favor wasting money on space programs or would you rather we stopped ignoring the suffering of the poor?' Overwhelmingly, our poll results indicate tepid support for the President on this issue."

Leadership means getting out ahead of the curve sometimes. Let's hope Dubya follows through on this as he did on Iraq. The Left loves to find other, terrestrial uses for the money, but the poor we shall always have with us. If we listened to them, we'd still have maps with "Here Be Beasts" describing the terra incognita west of Gibralter. Sooner rather than later a space must be made for private enterprise on the final frontier, but right now, we must rally behind Bush on this issue.

I support the Space Program effort as I think the overwhelming majority of Americans do. 1 Billion is just way too little to invest, personally I think the 15 Billion going to be spent on the aids problem in Africa, should be spent on the Space Program.

I don't know exactly where this space program proposal is going to go, but I believe this was a brilliant tactical political move for Bush. Aside from the "vision" aspect that usually plays well with Americans, NASA is a big part of the Florida economy...and those politicians who pander to NASA usually do very well in Florida elections. I'm sure Bush believes in this vision, but I can't help thinking that this announcement is also tied to those electoral votes in Florida.

The democrats, socialists, communists, NEA, and the unions all are against the USA going back into space.
WHY?
Well, first, we will have to start EDUCATING our children again. The Dumbing Down process has to cease. The above list of scumbags are strongly against educating Amwerican children. They don't make good robots that way.
Second ... if we are going back to educating our children for this venture (think back to the early/mid 60's) where there was a rush towards aerospace engineering, and all the other engineering fields, we are still going to be needing many skilled adn semi skilled laborers. Unfortunately, in the USA right now, WELFARE pays better than semi-skill labor so we are encouraging outside people to come in who REALLY want to work.
The left-wing radical extremists in the DNC, NEA and other unions, and of course the socialists and communists who want us to become a thirdworld nation like them are DEFINITELY against this venture.

I found this enlightening (although, I already knew it to be true):
...It made a difference who was said to be behind the plan. When half the poll sample was asked about a "Bush administration" plan to expand space exploration instead of the "United States" plan, opposition increased.
Just over half of Democrats' opposed the plan by "the United States." Once it was identified as a "Bush administration" plan, Democrats opposed it by a 2-to-1 margin...

And that's spread over 5 years. (Compare that to the $1.5 billion for saving marriages.) That's even small compared with what is spent on entitlement programs like ADC and farm/dairy subsidies. ADC alone runs in the 30 biilion per year range. And the hell of it is, those programs pay money to people to do nothing. At least with space exploration, we're getting results, and good, honest, hardworking people are actually out there doing a job, instead of sitting around doing nothing (except maybe breeding more welfare recipients).

spread over 5 years. Half a Happy Meal. One gallon of gas. Every year, of course, averaged over 5 years.

I listened to his speech at NASA and to tell you the truth it was exciting. Americans work best with goals and what he has done is set the goals for the agency for the next decade. The things we get out of space exploration improve our daily lives AND give us the soul satisfying experience of exploration.
It gives our children something to aim for, a reason to study math and science in order to become a part of something BIG.

WHOO-HOO!! We're going to the Moon! The practical thing to do is to take and hold the highest hill we can find, and nothing dominates the Earth like the moon. Besides, if we DON'T go, the only thing on the moon will be the Chinese.

It doesn't matter how many agree, what matters is "which many" agree. The fight for the mushy independent voter is won on issues like this. Clinton did it, Bush is doing it.

NASA is a big part of the Florida economyAdd CT, and probably VA to the list, and of course Texas. Also, the scientists who cannot work for a living and are currently working on stupid crap like global warming can be drafted to the new GOP cause.
