I consider Tom Brokaw to be the fairest of the Big Three network anchors, but obviously that is not saying much. I'd sum it up as he is the least rude in his presentation, and he did a very good interview with President Bush a year or two ago.
It is very satisfactory to see he and Cronkrite embrace their liberalness, confirming the bias many of us pointed to for years, but these self-same men told us we were nuts to perceive.
The rhetoric about "Jihads" and "silencing" is so much nonsense. They simply do not like to be confronted and contradicted and asked to supply documentation to support their assertions.
Interesting that he's leaving. Is Brian Williams going to take his place?

"Interesting that he's leaving. Is Brian Williams going to take his place?" Yes. When Brokaw announced his retirement early last year, he said he wanted to hang around for one more presidential election cycle. The network said at that time that Brian Willums would be taking over.
Oddly enough, since Bozell made the $1M challenge, the Nightly News HAS been a lot more fair in its story selection and reporting. They've chewed up Paul O'Neill and spat him out darn well, in contrast to what Katie Al Khouric did on the Toady Show.
I still think that if FOX would put Brit Hume in a 30-minute segment on all the FOX affiliates up against the ABCNBSeeBS trio, it would be a money-making venture. Brit would attract a sizeable audience.

Well at least this useful idiot knows that a "jihad" isn't building "personal inner strength" but rather a holy war.
Glad I turned off the alphabet networks years ago. I regret making myself endure nightly barrages from these anchors and late night radio broadcasts from Larry King for far too long.
They are just having a hissy fit because the truth is getting out and there are viable alternatives to the liberal domination of newsrooms.
FR, while propagating the words of these leftists, does permit much need rebuttal to their claims. "Letters to the editor" of newspapers never quite cut it.

"Free speech" exists so that leftists can criticize conservatives. It's not so that "everyone" can have a say.
The poor people are too ignorant to hear multiple viewpoints, they get confused easily.

This is the problem. The main purpose of journalism should be to just tell the news. What, when, where, why, and how. Like Joe Friday - just the facts, ma'am! The only stories the press will ever report this way are things they read from the police blotter (bar fights and raging fires). If you ever have any reference point to an event, you will instantly notice how bad a job the media does at reporting ANYTHING.

The FOX affiliates seem more interested in showing reruns of The Simpsons opposite the Alphabet Networks' news.
It would be good to see them get something on the broadcast channel (I don't have cable and so I don't subsidize Time-Warner-CNN, SeeBS-Viacom-MTV, ABCDisney, etc.). There is the occassional "FoxNews" story that makes it to the local Fox affiliate's 1 hour nightly news broadcast (9PM-10PM). An hour of news but nearly 30 minutes are sports, entertainment, and fluff.

Conservative criticism isn't free speech, but the enemy of free speech: "They suffocate vigorous discourse, the oxygen of a system such as ours, by identifying those who refuse to conform and encouraging a kind of e-mail or telephonic jihad, which is happily carried out by well-funded organizations operating under the guise of promoting fair press coverage." Wow. And Brokaw actually believes this. After all this time, it still stuns me how the left is so good at projecting all their own sins onto the other side.

I met Brent back in 1992 when he was in Manchester, NH. Great guy. Unsung hero of the conservative movement, in my estimation.
To: SJackson
I don't see in the column where Brokaw said "liberal bias is an 'obligation'" or "conservatives waging a 'jihad'."
Maybe Bozell should take some of his own medicine.

Journalists should "represent the views of those who are underrepresented in the social context, or the political context, and to make sure that they're not overlooked, and that their wrongs get the bright light of journalistic sunshine." He's kidding me, right? Where are Liberals "underrepresented" in the social context? I define social as "community" - I guess there are NO liberals in large city governments, nor are there any liberal voters in large cities such as New York City, San Francisco, Denver, St. Louis, Chicago, etc....right? Right?
How about another community beacon - colleges and universities? Nope, guess there are no liberals there, regardless of what the surveys say.
And the "political" context? Hmm, guess the 90's just never happened, did they?

" There is the occassional "FoxNews" story that makes it to the local Fox affiliate's 1 hour nightly news broadcast (9PM-10PM). An hour of news but nearly 30 minutes are sports, entertainment, and fluff." Our local Fox affil here in Nashville does a good newscast at 9pm (Central), but as with all affiliate newscasts, it's a smattering of car crashes, apartment fires, police scandals and the doings of country music celebrities...in addition to the national news. When FOX adds a third hour of primetime programming, it will be interesting to see how they do head-to-head with the other locals.
Living in Nashville is generally great, but when some country celeb kicks the wooden bucket, it's THE big item in all the TV newscasts for 10 days. It's amazing how they can stretch one death into ten days of stories. You'd think the Pope had crossed over. Fox is no different.

Now I'm getting a Walter Cronkite, elitist, Martha's Vineyard, boating with the Kennedys kind of image of old Tom. ...... sigh .....
I still wince at the liberalism of MV. When I was a child, we had a cottage in Oak Bluffs and spent our summers there. Were my parents attracted to The Vineyard because of liberal bias? I don't know, but I do know I have great nostalgia for the place, and strive to get back there whenever I can.
