City to retract release calling Free Republic a 'hate group.'
Fresno will pay $60,000 to conservative online forum Free Republic and retract a news release that called the organization a "hate group," according to a settlement agreement released Monday. Free Republic founder Jim Robinson, who lives in Fresno, said he wouldn't have filed the suit if the city had acknowledged its error.
"I think it's unfortunate the city did not retract and apologize immediately after they knew they were in the wrong," Robinson said.
City Attorney Hilda Cantu Montoy said the lawsuit was settled to "avoid the expense and burden of litigation."
"It's not in any way admitting any liability by any party," Montoy said.

Too bad they didn't settle sooner. They could have got a mug! I could've swore that Jim said everyone in City Hall was getting a mug as part of the settlement.

Robinson said he plans to use the settlement money to travel across the country in a motor home visiting Free Republic chapters. He will end the trip in Washington, D.C.Hey Jim, if you're planning on visiting us Mainiacs, I'd hold off until ice out July 1st, if I were you.

Personally, I'd suggest . . .
get a plush mobile home or indoor swimming pool.
I suppose we could suggest something disciplined and rationale like extra funding for targeted election year pushes in key states with posters and specific docs outlining election fraud; Shrillery's treason etc . . .
Perhaps we could hire some private eye to pry loose Shrillery's commie thesis.
But a lot of my heart would rather Jim bought a swimming pool or some such.
I do recognize that political action is more what we're about but I think he's earned whatever goodies he'd desire--for him, his family and John and his family.

I believe that Jim has mentioned acquiring an RV in other threads and using it to tour FR chapters. 60K would be enough for a good one plus the modifications he would need to operate it.
As far as I'm concerned, he deserves every penny and every erg of enjoyment he gets out of it. Running a website with all these divergent opinions must be like herding cats while wearing a blindfold and drinking mescal at the same time. Its a job for an individual made of sterner stuff than I.

What happened to all the people who call for tort reform to end "frivolous" lawsuits? It seems that it kind of depends on whose ox got gored when label a lawsuit as "just" or "frivolous".

What happened to all the people who call for tort reform to end "frivolous" lawsuits? They're still here. And I'm one of them.
It seems that it kind of depends on whose ox got gored when label a lawsuit as "just" or "frivolous".
If you consider a city official hiding behind her taxpayer-paid position to libel FreeRepublic as a hate group to be a "frivolous" matter, then I don't think we have much to discuss. Jim suffered damage as a result of the malicious comments, and was perfectly justified in taking legal action.

More likely you wanted to avoid embarrassment -- yours.
