Gary Hart: Clark Went 'Much Too Far' with 9/11 Pledge

Democratic presidential hopeful Gen. Wesley Clark went "much too far" last week when he promised that if he becomes president he'll guarantee that terrorists won't attack the U.S., former presidential candidate Gary Hart said Sunday.

"I disagree strongly with Gen. Clark," Sen. Hart told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg. Before the 9/11 attacks, Hart, along with former Sen. Warren Rudman, chaired a panel that warned that a terrorist attack against the U.S. was inevitable.

The Colorado Democrat told Malzberg, "I was a bit startled by [Clark's] statement if for no other reason [that] I think we have been saying we that we would be attacked again."

He cited "statements made by the director of the CIA, the director of the FBI, the director of Defense Intelligence, all of whom have said on the public record over the last year or two that we will be attacked again."

Perhaps Gen. Clark has some knowledge that they don't have or I don't have," Hart said. "But I think he went much, much too far."

On Friday Clark told the Concord Monitor, "If I'm president of the United States, I'm going to take care of the American people . . . Nothing is going to hurt this country - not bioweapons, not a nuclear weapon, not a terrorist strike - there is nothing that can hurt us if we stay united . . ."

Sen. Hart also denied a report last week that he was planning to run for Senate again, telling Malzberg, "I'm by nature a public servant and if the chance arises to serve the country I would welcome it. But there are lots of ways to do that without running for office."

Gary who?

Seriously, why would anyone listen to this guy? Even if he's right, which he is, in this case.

The question to ask is "What is he going to do to guaranty that we won't be attacked by terrorists?" Is he going to crowd every Muslim into an internment camp? Is he going to seal off the borders? Bush is already under attack for the relatively mild actions he's taken. What can Clark offer besides bravado?

If it happens, he will blame Bush.

I think we're watching Gary and Donna set up a commercial opportunity.

No, ol' Monkey Business endorsed Kerry last Sept. Of course, he may have changed his mind since then. Gary Hartpence.

Look at the photos. Somebody should tell him to use a plastic surgeon and not an embalmer.
