Movie star-turned-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's first State of the State address and first budget overshadowed another historic political event this week: the retirement of Willie Brown after nearly 40 years in public office.

Brown ended eight years as mayor of San Francisco on Thursday, turning over the office to designated successor Gavin Newsom. His mayoral reign followed 31 years in the state Assembly, a record 15 of them as speaker and the self-proclaimed "ayatollah of the Legislature."

If you're going to criticize a Democrat in the newspaper, either a) you have to say s/he's being too conservative or b) you have to criticize a Republican, too. It's probably even in the newspaper's official rulebook.

Why else would anyone bring Arnold into this? Arnold seems to have a big political vision and has shown no signs that he wants to get political influence to enrich himself and his buddies.

Willie's just going to go back to how he begun his career: a defense attorney for pimps.

I remember reading the Sacramento Bee one Sunday morning many years ago. On the front page was a picture of Herr Brown leaning over a Porsche inspecting it for damage. On the curb were several people looking after a bicyclist that Herr Brown had hit with his motorcar. The caption read:
"Speaker Brown looks on in concern as paramedics treat a bicyclist."

I thought he was going to take some educational courses at Velvet Jones University, regarding personnel management!

I was surprised to read an article yesterday that Willie had started out "fishing nickels from spittoons in segregated Texas" My mother is the same age and she was hoeing weeds and picking cotton at 7 years old in Texas; to bad he could only fish thorugh spit and not work

This is a VERY meager description of the corruption of Brown. The reason he lasted so long is precisely because he was so EXTREMELY corrupt (shades of Bill and Hillary).

The more corrupt they are, the more Bolsheviks and idiots are likely to vote for them.

Another Slick Willy bites the dust. Too bad they aren't breaking rocks.

I see they upgraded. It was Velvet Jones Institute of Technology when I went there.

My thought exactly.

As I was reading this piece, I thought to myself, "Bill Clinton couldda been Willie Brown".

Jeez, if he had been, California would be no better off. But, as for the rest of us...
