You are living with millions of illegal aliens around you. Any proposal which gets them registered as visitors, paying taxes, and identified is worthy of discussion.
You can go to most other countries, if you're properly registered, and get a job. That's not even an issue.
The problem here is that we have let this get out of control. We don't have a guest worker program for unskilled labor, which is what the vast majority of illegal aliens are. We need one.
Whether the one the President outlined is the right one, I don't know. Congress will debate that. But I'm hearing way too much wailing that we've just turned America over to Mexico. But that's precisely what we've been doing for decades. It's time for a program that regulates who is here and for how long. That's progress. What was nonsense was refusing to talk about it for decades.

"...Today, President Bush proposed a new temporary worker program to match willing foreign workers with willing U.S. employers when no Americans can be found to fill the jobs. The program would be open to new foreign workers, and to the undocumented men and women currently employed in the U.S...." Probably there's other "sleepers" in this bill

It's stealth amnesty. They won't leave after the three years. They already don't care about immigration laws.It stinks that Jorge Arbusto is too spineless to enforce the laws of the country.

Oops, make that: Have you seen anything from Tom DeLay on this, or know his position?

Thanks for the common sense. It's sorely lacking here. There was an anger directed at immigrants in many of today's posts on the subject that is second only to the anger I've seen Freepers direct at criminals awaiting execution.

We don't have a guest worker program for unskilled labor, We need one What are you talking about? Hundreds of thousands of legal aliens are here on working visas.

Therein lies the rub, my friend.
My wife has (legal) Mexicans who work as subcontractors installing carpet, etc. They work for 11 months of the year, and then go back to Mexico for a month or so to AVOID PAYING INCOME TAXES. I don't know exactly what the rule is on that, but that's what they tell people.
If I heard right, part of Bush's proposal was to make it easier for them to go back and forth across the border.

Illegals do not pay taxes! Let me repeat, illegals do not pay taxes. The only time they pay taxes is if they are buying twinkies. The financial cost of an illegal to our country is astronomical.

AH, a calm voice in the storm.
I would like this paired with 245(i) revokation, and end to chain migration, and documentation fraud reform, ie real immigration law enforcement.
Then and only then it might make sense.
