My first opinion on this subject is herein:
Mr Bush has proposed, not put into law but proposed a solution which will tie up congresscritters from now into 2006. Meanwhile he gets reelected and the law which gets passed will be dictated by a more conservative Congress. The dems NOW have to support what he proposed and can do nothing later if it fails.

Frankly the bigger crime being committed is by companies hiring illegals, not the act of illegal immigration itself.

True enough, but where does it stop? Is the bigger crime still committed by people who buy the fruits and vegetables produced by illegal labor?

When we teach people to think about the consequences of their buying habits, we'll accomplish one heck of a lot more for the American worker than by any government action...

I do feel sorry for these people.

Mexico is the tenth wealthiest country. They ought to be doing better and their country ought to be doing better for them. Clearly, these workers are getting a better deal in America than at home or they wouldn't be coming across. But Mexico is also not as stable as it could be. It might be that letting the workers in increases stability in Mexico, which is not a bad thing for the US considering Mexico is a direct neighbor with which there has been trouble.

Great. So now we get another 3 million illegal aliens to go along with our newly legitimized 9 million guest workers.

Yep. Thanks to our president, what do you think they're lining up in Nuevo Laredo to flow on across right about now?

If this doesn't increase the numbers of illegals coming in, I don't know what will.

Thanks, El Presidente, for pandering to ol' Vinnie Fox and his wishes over and above the rest of us.

So if the General Election were held next Tuesday and the choice was between Bush and Dean, would you stay home?

"People who take a far right position are just as culpable as the Liberals who take a far left position."

I agree with this comment. Whether we like it or not, Mexicans are coming here to do the work that American citizens do not WANT to do. What do they do? They hang chickens, make beds, clean toilets, dig trenches for fiber-optic cable in the sweltering summer sun, pick vegetables, cut down Christmas trees. So...why not set up a system that accounts for them and let them come over to do the work? The fact is we would be in trouble without them! In order for any real change to come to pass, the border will have to be CLOSED to prevent them from coming over illegally. That problem MUST BE SOLVED for any reform to have the desired effects. Besides, the border needs to be secured anyway for other obvious reasons. My fear is that the border will not be sealed as it should as part of all of this, and that you will end up with twice as many Mexicans here - those granted amnesty, and those that continue to enter illegally - if the border problem is not TRULY fixed.

So, opposing illegal immigration is a "far-right" position?

Opposing a documented worker program is sort of far-right to me. I didn't hear the President say he would be for illegal immigration, did you?

From people like me who think Bush has tried to come up with a workable, middle-of-the-road solution to this problem. People who take a far right position are just as culpable as the Liberals who take a far left position.

One of the most annoying things about this whole argument is why the president is even doing this- what is his political motivation? Typically legal immigrants are very opposed to illegals so this cannot really be to bolster hispanic support. This cannot be good for jobs as good jobs are already in short supply (for the time being). The only reason I could see that this would benefit the president politically is he caqn be seen as standing up the mean, nasty, bigotted conservatives. I don't like being used as a pawn, particularly when the action has such a potential for disaster as this does. We here WWII analogies all the time in regards to the war on terror. If Roosevelt had suggested easing illegal immigration soon after Pearl Harbor, he would have been strung up.

Good post. I start employees off above minimum wage too. If you ever sat down and calculated what a person could make per hour from Aid for Dependent Children, Welfare, Section 8 Housing and Food Stamps, I suspect it would be double minimum wage. What's the incentive to work the low paying jobs? (Rhetorical)

I have met hundreds of legal immigrants especially from former Soviet bloc countries that have genuinely praised the USA for giving them an opportunity to live free. I have not seen a like response from those south of the border and that bothers not only me but millions of other Americans.

I have. Last summer the Fresno freepers had a sweet little man, an illegal mind you from Mexico who joined us several times waving the flag in support of our troops. More than anything he wanted to become an American citizen. He was so grateful to be here, and so appreciate of this nation and our freedom. He isn't hundreds, but I will never forget that man. ( He was working to care for his family btw.)

Thanks for the personal attack.

Saying your post was hyperbole is a "personal attack"?

Saying you have thin skin is a personal attack.

Nonsense...hiring inferior labor because their American doesnt make America stronger...it makes it weaker. I wear my flag just fine.

And I bet your flag was made in China by slave labor, too, wasn't it , merchant?

Guest workers do NOT get a free pass to citizenship.

YOU don't understand how the immigration game is played. I guarantee you that virtually every guest worker who desires it will be given full citizenship in due course, along with immediate and (in some cases) extended family.

Excuse me, but my thinking is not flawed - your assumptions are. My statements were not with regard to the status quo, but with regard to the proposed program. If the workers that are now here illegally were allowed to be here legally, they would earn more as a rule (minimum wage would apply), and all of the income would be taxed. As of right now, most of the income is untaxed because it is under the table.

Education costs are not paid by each family according to the number of kids or by income level. Everyone, citizen or not, have been granted the right to a publicly funded education. Right now, most illegals do not contribute to funding that education through taxes - under the President's proposal, they would.

With regard to divided loyalties, I agree that anyone who wants to live here permanently should have their loyalties with The US. This program is directed toward people that do not want to live here permanently, but will return home once their job ends or their visa expires.

Buchanan was on Katie Couric's Morning Propaganda show this morning, assisting the 'Rats by attacking Bush.

Talk about politics making strange bedfellows!
