"Guest workers" as a low wage concept is just slavery-lite anyway, especially with the current illegal situation.

Actually I agree with you here. In the current situation there is an underclass of virtually indentured wrokers.

The problem is how to change it.

Aside from all the details, if I knew that President Bush would prosecute employers who hire illegals and would drop those same illegals off nearthe Guatemalan border when found, I would be inclined to support him here.

But and its a big butt, President Reagan has already been down this road and we got the walk softly but they forgot about the big stick.

Yeah, I just noticed that it changed back too. Odd.

They won't track anyone down. This is a stupid idea that has absolutely no teeth. It is just a way for Bush to get more Hispanic votes and feel good. Yikes--he's sounding more like a liberal every day.

It falls into the category of "Principle of Unintended Consquences": hardly anyone will sign up because they are here illegally and obviously have no conscience or fear of our laws. So they will continue to be leeches on a government that just cannot say "No." Pathetic, but true.

I think the analogy to Theoden/Grima ("Wormtongue") of LOTR is a good one.

He also said they would be enforcing the laws regarding the hiring of illegal workers and there will be hefty fines

And they really, really, really mean it this time.

The rhetoric about Americans refusing to work at certain jobs is no different than the rhetoric when Nafta was first being argued. Sending manufacturing jobs to Mexico would "enhance the life of Mexicans and stop them from flooding our borders illegally".

That was tired see-through dribble, and so is this current garbage. Globalists make terrible presidents; clearly the apple doesn't fall very far from the tree either.

It's not hostility towards immigrants. It's hostility towards not following the Rule of Law. Why should I play by the rules if someone else gets rewarded for not playing by the rules?

Your father's family sounds like my husband's family. They live in Brownsville and would be the first to tell you how much the illegals drain the resources of the government. They are appalled at Bush's proposal. They might say it in Spanish, but they are still furious at his idea.

Unfortunately, our country has a history of wanting labor for less than market value. This way is better than the first way, but I still think it's wrong. It's wrong for them AND us.

Of course they need to be legal. But if some guy from Viet Nam for instance is better than the local offering being turned out by public school, tough luck to the American.

Is the guy from Viet Nam legal? If not, then I completely disagree with you.

Yet historically 'hispanics' vote 60/40 democratic.

46% of Hispanics voted to recall Davis in California. The liberal whiner press called it the "end of the latino vote".

That's what they want you to think, but it won't happen.

15 years from now they'll be another 10-15 million illegals on top of the 10-15 million that are getting amnesty

Nope, that's where you are wrong. There is NO amnisty here. A guest worker can stay for 3 years. If they want to become citizens they can apply just like anyone else but they have to go to the back of the line. In order to stay here they must be fully employed and they must pay a fee to remain in the country (if they are employed that will be no problem). If you become unemployed you have to go home. You can apply for another job, but you must do it from your home country.

Jobs must be advertised and if an American applies, you can not offer the job to ANY guest worker.

How very odd for you to call me 'a baby' on a thread filled with name-calling, temper-tantrum throwing, irrational people, when all I wanted from this thread was to find out what was really going on with this immigration policy.

I happen to believe that the President could come down hard on illegals, and still lose no political points, and make America safer and a better place.

I'm not a Kool-aid drinker. I'm a thinking Conservative who respects this President, while disagreeing with some of his policies.

Now I'm going to do what wasn't possible on this thread. I'm going to find out what the President really said, and try to think through what it means.

I might not think what he's doing is enough, and may disagree profoundly with what he's said, but I will always respect him for what he has done to keep this nation safe, to stand for American sovereignty and strength abroad, and to stand up in the face of an evil enemy.

(btw, I like your taglines).

I love the, "Jobs no American will work." I did customer service for a while. One cannot talk on the phone to customer service without knowing the person is in a different country. I couldn't find one of those jobs now and I could use one.

Today's AJC has a headline on the business page about Earthlink cutting 1300 jobs, offshoring many of them.
