The appaer to me to be natural CONSERVATIVES in their outlook, but the hardcore anti-immigrant Conservatives are alienating what should be natural allies.

Yet historically 'hispanics' vote 60/40 democratic.

Mexicans as a subgroup lean more left than that.

I just don't understand the unrelenting hostility towards immigrants, and particularly towards Latino immigrants

Here's a clue, Stu: implying that racism is the motivation is a cheap gutter tactic. Don't stoop to it.

If 9 million white Canadians were skulking around illegally in our country, demanding that Bush find a way to legalize them, most if not all of us here would be just as angry.

But we don't have 9 million Canadians skulking around in our country illegally. Do you know why? Because by and large Canadians have successfully taken up the challenge to create a society of laws that works.

The problem rests with the Mexicans themselves--indivuduals as well as leaders. They have a hell-hole for a country, and rather than roll up the sleeves and fix it, they move across the border. They have no incentive to do the hard work of bettering their country (a place of magnificent geography and abundant natural resources) because Bush is willing to give them an easier short-term solution.

Did Bush propose any of the policieses you just listed?

He didn't, did he? So your suggestions are completly irrelevant

So there's no significance in severity between infractions in your world? One has national security ramifications, hence it's inclusion in the constitution. The other has minimal to no impact on society in general.

I should remind you that the president's job is to uphold the constitution not make excuses as to why laws are not being enforced and offer further exemptions for law breakers.

>>Aw, hell no!<<

My hubby is almost like you. Although he does have a job, no raise for three years is drowning us.
I agree fully.

I love the, "Jobs no American will work." I did customer service for a while. One cannot talk on the phone to customer service without knowing the person is in a different country. I couldn't find one of those jobs now and I could use one.

Congress

CONGRESS! Good Lord, this will never get resolved, let alone resolved the right way. Until then, I remain skeptically optimistic, or optimistically skeptical.

I didn't see pandering, but rather a way to get a handle on who is in our country.

One of two things will happen - either the illegals will ignore the program, which will keep the status quo, or the flow of illegals will increase. This will by no means stem the flow.

The one thing that's been said through this that gives me hope is that Congress has to approve it. I.E., we still get a say.

I'm still furious, but my blood pressure is starting to come back down.

Probably not.

I actually like gridlock - nothing happens and that's just fine with me. Less government.

Even CNN has this losing 23% to 63% right now. Fox has it losing 24% to 69%. Someone better take a good look at all these polls and read-think their position!

The Conservative position on this issue should be pretty clear -- side with those who take personal responsibility for their lives, work their butts off and send money home to their families, and go after those who do not make a positive contribution to society.

Excellent post! You put the president's proposal into one sentence!

Yours is one of the few clear-eyed takes on this that I've read. The President's proposal is just that; Congress will have to debate its pros and cons and act on it one way or the other.

The icing on the cake would be renewing the AWB.

You know he will do it if Rove thinks it is a good idea. I am so disappointed. I really thought W. had some character. Count me out in Nov. The Republican need to learn a lesson. So do conservatives.

Not with respect to foreign policy / terrorism. But in terms of domestic fiscal policy, CFR, etc? Yes. Because Al's terrible policies would have been fought by Congress on partisan grounds, while Bush's similar policies have been embraced on partisan grounds.

Enforcing existing law.

By forcing them to register, they become temporary workers instead of illegal immigrants.

And how would you suggest enforcing the existing law? Pull the miltary back from Iraq and Afghanistan. Make more reservists leave they jobs and report to duty to guard the border? Volunteer yourself? Waiting for you to come up with a better plan....

Given that I've got Kemp, Bennett

Kemp? Bennett? I listen to them about as much as I listen to the rest of the bootlickers.

and Cato

Please cite CATO's thinking on this policy. Thanks.
