Not a good idea, in my opinion, but it sounds like she's going to run.

There's no way Nelson is going to retire.

Harris should run, and Martinez should challenge Nelson in '06.

Not a good idea, in my opinion, but it sounds like she's going to run. The more I read about Martinez, the more I like him as a candidate. He is still relatively unknown statewide and isn't all that experienced. But I still like Katherine a lot, and if she wishes to run, go for it. She deserves the opportunity and is an excellent candidate. Republicans should never let Democrats decide who we run, or we would be running John McCain for everything.

Go Katherine, don't let the White House determine your fate ...

I think Harris will just serve to bring out the lunatic fringe "Gore was Robbed in 2000" vote and possibly endanger what can be a pick up seat. I like Martinez as well and think he is the better candidate.
To: JohnnyZ
She's trying to prove she's independent.
She's dreaming if she thinks the dems won't be motivated to go to the polls if she's the candidate.
This may hurt other republicans on the ticket by encouraging dem voters to turn out.

Only not a good idea if you are referring to Martinez, who'd probably have a good shot.
But if it is flashbacks to the Floriduh Fiasco that you are talkiing about, let not your heart be troubled. The re-election of Jeb showed what that stuff is worth.

I'l wager you $5 bucks he won't run again....look, GOP picks up minimum of 4 seats in the Senate this time, and could be more if Dean's the nominee...the Dem Senate caucus ain't gonna be fun the next two years..it's gonna pull farther to the HARD left...the Ted Kennedy wing...and do nothing but filabuster SC nominations...why would Nelson want to stay there after 06?....

Why run a candidate with high negatives (Harris) when you can run a candidate with low negatives (Martinez)?
I do also like Mel Martinez (who is plenty experience as county mayor (basically) and Cabinet head, and strongly pro-life) better than Harris.
I do think KH is probably the second best candidate in terms of electability, after Martinez. I'd prefer Webster but he needs $$$, McCollum hell no the moron already blew one open seat race, and Byrd is about as polarizing as Harris.
But in terms of policy and principles and wanting an effective senator, they're all fairly conservative but Harris is right there near the bottom of my list, right above Klayman.

I think Harris will just serve to bring out the lunatic fringe "Gore was Robbed in 2000" vote and possibly endanger what can be a pick up seat. It would take a gun to keep those nuts away from the polls. It is those lunatics that try to vote 4 or 5 times in every election.
To: ken5050
why would Nelson want to stay there after 06?.... Maybe 'cause he could be Vice President by 2009. Maybe because being Senator is a nice, cushy job. Maybe 'cause he isn't gonna chicken out, doesn't want to be remembered as the guy who gave up without a fight. Maybe 'cause he'll be in the limelight with the renewed focus on NASA. Maybe 'cause he's sitting on $1.5 million in campaign funds three years before the election.

but you didn't answer the points I raised.....Nelson could make big bucks as a lobbyist, or join a few boards, work 1/10 the time....what does he gain..I can't buy the "giving up without a fight" bit....look at Breaux...he realized what the future holds, and he didn't like it....sorry, my friend..you and I usually concur about 99% of the time....we're of a different mindset this time...

I could swear I read a few weeks ago that Harris stated she would
not run??
From "up here" (that is, not knowing the "local politics") it would seem that a better choice for her would be Nelson's seat, whether he's running again or not (!)...in '06 did someone say? That would at least give her two terms in the House to run on, and Martinez as a former cabinet secretary should be an excellent candidate even if he's less "name recognized" at the moment...

Larry Klayman [of Judicial Watch] is also running as an R for the seat.
To: rbessenger
The 'lunatic fringe' is not the problem in Florida. Rest assured that they will be out in force no matter who runs for the senate.
What you should worry about is the Republican turnout. If Bush does go for an amnesty package, many Florida Republicans will sit the election out. While they cannot bring themselves to vote for a Dean-like candidate, they also will not bother to support Bush.
