According to Sid Rosenburg, the Sports guy on the Imus in the Morning program, the Redskins are set to make an announcement today that the former Redskins Coach will be returning to be the new head coach.

Update:

Just a week after Steve Spurrier called it quits, the Washington Redskins have a new coach – their old one. Joe Gibbs agreed Wednesday to take charge of the struggling franchise. Gibbs coached the team from 1981-92, winning three Super Bowls along the way before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. [link to source]

My God, he's going to bring the Head Hog back?!?

Why do I have this image of Joe Gibbs in a porkpie hat, black suit, and sunglasses, leaning over to an assembled group of Art Monk, Gary Clark, Russ Grimm, Jeff Bostic, John Riggins, Darrell Green, and Monte Coleman, and saying...

"We're getting the band back together..."

Local Sports talk radio is now proclaiming this as "Return to Glory"....best they should keep their heads screwed on straight...it ain't gonna happen overnight...but I'll take 9 and 7 even with no playoff appearance...if at least one of those wins is against Dallas.

He failed here, in New Orleans, and never made it past preseason with the Raiders.

Shuler had the ball of his foot crushed at NO and continued to try to play. Finally at Oakland, they told him to quit or he would not be able to walk without a cane. He has essentially lost the ball of his foot. He is in pain everyday because of that injury

Like him or not, he was a tough, athletic guy who caught some bad breaks. He was big, strong, fast, and had a cannon for an arm.

BTW, that same college team that wasn't prostyle enough for some started Peyton Manning the following year. But I guess he is just a hack, too.

Joe Gibbs returns to NFL as head coach of the Washington Redskins

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Joe Gibbs, former head coach of the NFL's Washington Redskins and owner of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), announced today his return as head coach of the Washington Redskins.

Gibbs retired as head coach of the Washington Redskins following the 1992 season after leading the Redskins to three Super Bowl victories in four appearances. In 12 seasons, Gibbs' record with the Redskins was 140-65 with a 16-5 playoff record.
"The desire to coach has always been with me, even after being away from the game for 11 years," said Gibbs, whose contract with the Redskins will run for five years. "After speaking with my wife Pat, we both agreed it would be a thrill to go back. I appreciate Daniel Snyder giving me the opportunity to coach again. But rest assured, I remain personally committed to Joe Gibbs Racing and each and every sponsor who supports the many employees of Joe Gibbs Racing."

JGR, winner of two NASCAR Nextel Cup Series championships and 40 Nextel Cup victories since its inception in 1992, will not be affected by Gibbs' return to the NFL sideline. Key management remains in place, with Gibbs' oldest son - J.D. Gibbs - continuing his role as team president. All of the drivers and key sponsors have long term deals, and the management structure will not change, with Jimmy Makar and each team's respective crew chiefs directing the racing operations. Joe Gibbs will remain as the race team's CEO.

"I am real excited for my Mom and Dad," said J.D. Gibbs. "I think this move gives our sponsors added value in terms of getting national exposure. JGR is a strong organization and it's in capable hands. I feel great about the state of this race team and its future success on the race track."

Prior to making his decision to return to the NFL, Joe Gibbs met with the race team's key corporate sponsors, most notably The Home Depot and Interstate Batteries.

Joe Gibbs Racing Remains Committed to Winning
"Joe Gibbs is an integral part of The Home Depot family, and I speak for the more than 300,000 company associates in support of his new challenges as coach of the Washington Redskins," said Bob Nardelli, chairman, president and CEO, The Home Depot. "Given Joe's success at building teams, it comes as no surprise that he would add NFL coach to his current responsibilities for the #20 Home Depot car driven by Tony Stewart. We look forward to a successful 2004 season with Joe Gibbs Racing."

"All of us at Interstate are extremely excited for Joe and look forward to the Cowboys - Redskins rivalry heating up again". said Norm Miller, chairman, of Interstate Batteries. "Joe Gibbs has been terrific for racing, leading Interstate and Bobby Labonte to the 2000 Winston Cup Championship and I know he will quickly return the Redskins to Super bowl form."

In addition to meeting with the race team's sponsors, Joe Gibbs also visited with his two NASCAR Nextel Cup Series drivers, Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte.

"I'm very happy for him," said Stewart. "He's always been a coach, and football has always been very close to him. After working with Joe for a number of years, I know his commitment to winning is unmatched. Fans of the Redskins should be very happy."

"I'm thrilled for Joe" said driver Bobby Labonte, who has driven for Joe Gibbs since 1995, "Donna and I think this is the coolest thing we've heard in a long time. The race team will be just fine, and all of us on the #18 team will work just as hard to win another championship in 2004 "

In releated news, Joe Theisman, Dexter Manley, and John Riggins are reported to have agreed to come out of retirement to play for their former coach. Theisman, who some have said is one of the most annoying color commentators in all of sports, will leave his job at ESPN to return to the Redskins as the starting quarterback. Manley, who was last seen smoking crack in a well maintained box along the Potamic River, said through his "street bitch," that he will be in shape and ready to play by the spring mini-camp. Riggins who refused to confirm or deny the report, said, "Get the #$&* out of my #$&*ing face before I kick the #$&*ing @!^) out of you."

The Lions worth more than da Bears? As a Lion's fan, I'm shocked. (although Ford Field may have a lot to do with that).

I've never heard of Skip Baylis, so I won't even respond to that. But, you can't tell me that Landry et al had no idea that Henderson and others were tooting up in the locker room at halftime. Henderson even said he used to snort on the sidelines! The drug abuse was known within the organization long before the public found out. As far as Septien, I remember seeing the segment on his lawsuit on some investigative show years ago, then IIRC it was settled out of court, which leads one to believe the Cowboys had some guilt. If he was a known child molestor, then the team should have dumped him for that, but keeping a hernia secret in order to keep him on the field is unforgiveable.

Also, my despising the Cowboys has nothing to do with their rivalry with the Redskins; I despise the Baltimore Raisins as well, for refusing to cut Ray Lewis after his involvement in a murder, then his destruction of evidence and lying to police afterwords. They are a good team and have a knack for picking great defensive and special teams personnel, but I can't respect them until Lewis and the management that kept him on are long gone. Of course the league in general should have done more than fining him...

"Isn't there a Senate seat opening up in NC? He could walk into that."

What credentials does Gibbs have for politics?

Henderson even said he used to snort on the sidelines!

He said whatever he had to say to sell his book.

It's likley that Septien took what he could get from the Cowboys, since he was released after molesting a 14 year old girl in the off season.

You seem to have the idea that sports' teams should wet-nurse grown men. If a guy can play and doesn't do anything illegal or that reflects negatively on the team when he's on his own time, why should Tom Landry jack with him?

None. But if Nolan Ryan ran for the US Senate from Texas, he'd win in a landslide.

Here's the thing: if Snyder can't make it work with Gibbs, he'll almost have to sell the team. In some ways this is a last roll of the dice for Snyder, albeit one heck of a roll.

Wasn't it Joe Gibbs and John Cooke who were bidding against Dan Snyder to buy the team before Snyder brought in FedEx to make the purchase?

"What credentials does Gibbs have for politics?"

Two that I can think of right off the bat:

1: He's honest

2: He's not a lawyer

Sorry about the wrong order...What am I thinking? The two are mutually exclusive.

Stand by for the other 723,497 reasons
