According to Sid Rosenburg, the Sports guy on the Imus in the Morning program, the Redskins are set to make an announcement today that the former Redskins Coach will be returning to be the new head coach.

Update:

Just a week after Steve Spurrier called it quits, the Washington Redskins have a new coach – their old one. Joe Gibbs agreed Wednesday to take charge of the struggling franchise. Gibbs coached the team from 1981-92, winning three Super Bowls along the way before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. [link to source]

Should we start in with the drug users on each team? I think I can name as many Redskins as Cowboys. I will name a few Redskins and then we can go from there if that is what you want.

Mike Sellers, Daryl Russell, Lional Dalton, Skip Hicks, Joe Theisman Jr... oh wait that was his son at ND with the Crack.

That is just from the first page of a search. I am sure if you want to come up with names we can do it all day. Drug use by NFL players is just like society. There is always someone that is using them you don't know about. Look at Brett Favre and Rush Limbaugh.

Your right there MUD! The trouble is though for the last 8-10 years it has not been a rivalry. Dallas has won 15 of the last 16 games. I long for the days when Landry and Allen were on the sidelines or Gibbs and Jimmy Johnson squaring off. That is when the games were fun! Parcells and Gibbs should bring back some luster to this long dormant rivalry.

The Moody Blues were a super group and Gibbs was a great singer. I didn't know he switched to football however.

Mizzou Dude.....since you seem to have access to facts and figures.....what was Gibb's record against Parcells? It may be even less impressive than Joe's record versus Landry and his successors...but you know what? Don't care......anything has got to be better than this football hell we've been dealing with...and I'm looking past the two a year match-ups with da Boys...under your guy Norv we coudn't even beat the Cards...and Gibbs feasted off them regularly when they had talent(Neil Lomax)...they were OUR guaranteed two wins penciled in every year.
You must admit ...for a time there the NFC east was the cream of the league...Parcells Giants....Gibb's Skins....the Eagles were good too..... remember that "Body Bag " game ?...the one where the kick returner Brian Mitchell had to play QB?

Interesting that you bring up Dexter Manley in relation to the numerous Cowboy druggies [I don't know if you're a Cowboys fan or a Redskins fan, or if you even follow the NFL, so I'm not trying to bust your chops; I'm just spelling out why I feel the way I do about the Cowboys]. The difference in how they were treated is one example of why the Cowboys are truly Satan's Team, the most evil organization in pro sports.

The Redskins don't put up with drug and alcohol abuse. FB Mike Sellers was cut not too long after being arrested for DUI. Tony Peters was cut after his arrest and his attitude showed he wasn't willing to work out his problems. [Sonny Jurgensen and Billy Kilmer never missed a day of practice or a game despite their legendary carousing, so they can't be used as an example of anything other than what many players were like in the '60's and '70's.]

Dexter Manley tried to recover numerous times, and the team helped him with various programs. He was also a person who wanted to help his community, and admitting that he is illiterate was a gutsy thing for him to do. Finally, after the team was exhausted trying to help him, and his physical shape was not up to NFL standards, he was gone. At one point he was in a motel in Houston threatening suicide. Shortly thereafter he was sent to prison, which is about the only place where he could get his act together. I don't know where he is now, but I truly hope he is straight now.

Dallas, on the other hand, has turned a blind eye on numerous drug addicts, as long as they could perform on the field. And this goes back to the days of Landry, not just Johnson. Even though these are adults we're talking about, the franchise should try to interdict and help if possible. Then you have the Michael Irvin's assaulting teammates with knives or razors, the numerous incidents at strip clubs, etc., that happen with more consistency with Cowboy players than any other team.

Throw in the fact that the Cowboys team doctor diagnosed kicker Rafael Septien with a hernia, and Landry and the front office chose not to tell him so they could keep him on the field (and put his very life in jeopardy by doing so), and you can see why I shed no tears when Jerry Jones fired Landry who found out when reporters came knocking on his door. The Dallas Cowboys are an immoral organization. How Roger Staubach was able to stand his tenure there I'll never know.

"...for the last 8-10 years it has not been a rivalry."

You don't haveta tell me, even when Dallas sucked, they still beat the Skins. I'm increasingly convinced that Norv Turner remained on Jerry Jones' payroll even after he joined the Skins...LOL!! NFC East oughtta be real interesting as Coughlin's a good fit with the Giants and the Eagles continue to fly high under Reid. Add a Gibbs-led Redskin squad to the Parcells-led Cowboys and I can foresee quite a fight just to win the Division.

Hey, you thought it would be cute to take a stab at Dexter and his drug problems to show some sort of self-perceived superiority complex you have about "America's Team". I was simply reminding you of that old adage about glass houses...

Chuck Noll was the beneficiary of a great team, that group needed very little coaching. Gibbs took a group of individuals, and molded it into a team. He is a similar coach to Dick Vermeil, only better. If he could bring a similar type of team back to the NFL, good defense and a pounding running game, he would be successful just like before. With his style, the QB is not required to be great, just workmanlike, and the team wins.

I was not taking a shot at Dexter. I was asking Redskins fans what happened to him since they may know. I know that Hollywood Henderson cleared up his act and now runs a foundation to keep children from starting drugs. He makes videos for schools to use and stuff like that. http://www.fmsproductions.com/Catalog/ThomHender/Hollywood.htm

There isn't a self perceived superiority complex among Cowboy fans but just an inferiority complex by Cowboy haters. They just cant understand how so many people love the Cowboys.

We could never understand why someone would vote for Bill Clinton either, but it happened...

Parcells record HTH versus Gibbs was 10-6. He took 3 of his loses in his first 2 years against Gibbs when Parcells was rebuilding the Giants.

I do remember the body bag game. The NFC EAST has always had some great games and great coaches. Consider that out of the 36 superbowls the NFC East has won 10 of the titles! The Cowboys 5, Redskins 3 and the Giants 2. Now if we can get the Eagles to hold up the end of the bargain this year that would add another to our total.

But I think that there are some that the game never passed by. First on the list is Dick Vermeil. Second is Marv Levy who was in his 70's and still innovative. Bill Parcells is the same way almost and he is on his 4 team.

The players of todays game is the reason my Sunday's have been football free now for 5 years.

Same here, but for me it's only been 2 years of no NFL football watching. I can't stand watching those prima donnas dance, prance, and jive-shake after almost every play as they do now. And those juvenile stunts by players like Owens and Horn are starting to make the NFL look more like the XFL. I still enjoy watching college football though.

Oh and the signing of Daryl Russell as a "model citizen" was just fine. Please don't throw the stones in the glass house. You may just break a window or 2.

The Redskins were a pitiful team this year even against another mediocre team, the Cowboys. Bill Parcells has transformed Dallas and he isn't through yet. Jerry Jones ran the Cowboys into the ground but Parcells will bring them back. Gibbs will do the same thing with the Redskins. If Gibbs could put up with the tempermental Tony Stewart he can put up with anyone. He'll do fine.

The secret of coaching is a good management ability. You have to have a plan, and to work your plan. What went on in Dallas before Parcells and this year with the Redskins was complete chaos and lack of direction. Gibbs won't have any of that. Good for the Redskins. I'm looking forward to seeing them next year when they face the Cowboys.

Dallas, on the other hand, has turned a blind eye on numerous drug addicts, as long as they could perform on the field. And this goes back to the days of Landry, not just Johnson.

I notice you don't give any examples under Landry. I'll give you one: Hollywood Henderson, who was dropped like a hot potato when his drug use became known.

Your assessment that Dallas was "immoral" sounds like sour grapes from a fan of a team which can't hold a candle to the consistency of the Cowboys over the years.

That, or you're really the Cowboy-hating girly-man, Skip Bayless.

You really need to get over the fact that you weren't wanted in Dallas anymore, Skippy.

Did you get this from Skippy's book:

Throw in the fact that the Cowboys team doctor diagnosed kicker Rafael Septien with a hernia, and Landry and the front office chose not to tell him so they could keep him on the field (and put his very life in jeopardy by doing so),

This is patent nonsense, or you just made it up.

You know, of course, that Rafael Septien was a child molester, don't you? Should Landry have "intervened" there?
