Legal Woes for Clinton Library in Ark.

Associated Press

Arkansas officials Tuesday asked a court to throw out a lawsuit filed by the Clinton Presidential Foundation seeking tax breaks for the presidential library project.

In the filing, the state Department of Economic Development claims the nonprofit foundation is not entitled to tax breaks under a program designed to promote "business enterprises."

"The list of 'business enterprises' does not include libraries, schools, educational facilities or government institutions," the filing said.

The Clinton Foundation, which is building the $160 million Clinton Presidential Center near downtown Little Rock, applied for $3.5 million in reimbursements for building materials under the program. The foundation sued after the department denied the request in 2002.

Foundation attorney Jane Dickey said Tuesday she had not seen the filing and could not comment.

Dickey has argued that the foundation meets the law's requirements, including that it be a corporate headquarters, create at least 25 jobs and have no retail sales.

Can these Clintons do nothing gracefully & with tact?
They can't even open a library without incident.

The nerve. Here we have Democrats screaming about the horrors of tax breaks for the wealthy and then they demand tax breaks on behalf of a foundation for a guy who got millions for his memoirs.

What incredible gall. What incredible irony.

The Clintons cannot even raise money from private contributors for their library? Has their money sources dried up? I am laughing.

No retail sales? What kind of presidential library is that? I'm sure they will be selling some blue dresses.

I sent an email last month to be a monthly donor because I wanted a cool cup. I never heard back. I'll send in money via the regular mail.

Has anyone else noticed that Arkansas doesn't cut the Clintons any slack anymore? He used to run that state like it was his own private piggy bank.
