Woman Dies In Cold On Her Porch

Bitter Temperatures Blamed For Death

POSTED: 4:00 PM CST January 6, 2004 UPDATED: 5:21 PM CST January 6, 2004

OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha woman died of hypothermia overnight Tuesday in the bitter cold weather gripping the city. Francis Moore, 72, was found lying on the porch of her home at 2447 Pinkney St.

A woman was dropping her child off Tuesday morning for daycare when she found Moore on the enclosed porch of her home. She told 911 operators that Moore wasn't wearing shoes. Police believe she may have stepped outside and locked herself out. She wasn't dressed for the cold.

Moore (pictured, left) was transported to Creighton University Medical Center where she later died.

I can appreciate the sadness of this story.

Last night it was -17 and later this afternoon it was around 3 - 5 degrees or so. My husband and I were plowing our roads and the neighbors road when we got stuck in the snow.

Started snowing hard so I got out of the ATV which has a snowplow attachment while my husband went to get the big tractor. I decided to walk to the house and in a dress with a jacket to boot. (NOTE: THIS WAS ONE OF THE STUPIDEST MOVES I HAVE EVER MADE.)

Kept falling in the snow. I'm short so this was a problem.

Kept falling and faling and falling.

Got back in the ATV.

My husband came and got me.

I'm in my favorite fuzzy bathrobe, fuzzy house slippers and a nice glass of wine.

Thank you Jesus.

Amen.

Lot's of snow forecasted tonight and tomorrow.

Oh joy.

I think I'm going to cancel everything and do my baking tomorrow.

So glad you are okay.

Not the first person to do something without thinking.

Ridiculing the dead woman is sinful.

Probably stood outside unable to make a decision long enough for Hypothermia to set in (doesn't take long)
then made more really bad decisions.

Remember, WHEN YOU FEEL COLD.......PUT SOMETHING ON!
Do not wait till you are shivering! By then you ARE in
the first stages and will take twice as long to recover.
If you wait till you are SHAKING, YOU ARE IN HYPOTHERMIA
and your cognitive processes are already degrading !!!

You are so correct. I had an aunt that was in her 70's and lived in a four apartment building. She went to get her newspaper one AM after all the other others in the building went to work. The wind closed the door behind her. She was found alive but incoherent on the hall floor by a mailman.
Temp was in the -ºF's. It takes very little time to die in that type of weather.

Poor dear! God grant her rest. Who knows what may have happened.

Lord Jesus, I pray that she is with you, in warmth and safety and surrounded by your love.

CORRECTION TO POST NO. 9 --- It was 11 degrees not 3-5 degrees when my husband and I were snow plowing.

Could not have happened. No less a paragon of truth and honesty [according the the main stream news media] than albert gore,jr. has said that we are in the throes of global warming.al gore with the exception of bill clinton, howard dean and all democrats is the most honest individual in history. They would make George Washington seem like a piker by comparison.
