(MOVEON)US LIBERAL GROUP SORRY FOR HITLER/BUSH COMPARISON!
YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO via Reuters ^ | 1/6/04

Posted on 01/06/2004 9:21:58 AM PST by areafiftyone

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org, often a lightning rod for opposition to the Iraq (news - web sites) war, apologized Monday for posting two political messages on the Internet comparing President Bush (news - web sites) to Hitler.

One ad mixed images of Hitler and Nazi militarism with Bush taking the oath of office and equated German war crimes of 1945 with Bush's foreign policy. The other quoted Hitler and Bush as saying they acted in God's name to vanquish their enemies.

After being roundly denounced by Jewish leaders and Republicans, MoveOn.org issued a mea culpa saying the two ads were in poor taste. But the group said they had been displayed in error as part of a contest inviting members of the public to create and send in their own ideas for anti-Bush television spots.

Neither of the two ads was ever aired on TV and by Monday had been removed from the "Bush in 30 Seconds" Web site (www.bushin30seconds.org) set up by the MoveOn.org Voter Fund.

The head of the Voter Fund, Wes Boyd, said his group posted more than 1,500 entries in all submitted by "ordinary Americans" and that the two Hitler spots "slipped through our screening process."

"None of these was our ad, nor did their appearance constitute endorsement or sponsorship by MoveOn.org Voter Fund," Boyd's statement said. "We do not support the sentiment expressed in the two Hitler submissions."

He accused Republican leaders of a "maliciously misleading" attempt to cast the two Hitler ads as sponsored by his group.

Nevertheless, the leaders of three major Jewish groups -- the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Congress and the Simon Wiesenthal Center -- roundly criticized MoveOn for placing the Hitler ads on the Internet.

They and Republican National Committee (news - web sites) Chairman Ed Gillespie all seized on MoveOn.org's own pledge in the ground rules for its "Bush in 30 Seconds" contest not to "post anything that would be in inappropriate for television."

"To compare the president of the United States, his fight against al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), with the politics of Hitler is ... shameful, it is beyond the pale, and has no place in the legitimate discourse of American politics," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, the founder and dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Hier, Gillespie and other critics of MoveOn also demanded that Democrats seeking the presidential nomination in 2004 should speak out to renounce the Hitler ads.

MoveOn.org said Monday it was going ahead with its contest. It said the winning entry will be picked by a panel of celebrities and political pundits, including comedian Al Franken, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore and Democratic political strategist James Carville.

The winning spot will be announced at a gala event Jan. 12 in New York and will be aired as a paid political commercial during the week of Bush's upcoming State of the Union address.

It is not the first time Bush has been compared to Hitler. In 2002, Germany's Justice Minister, Herta Daeubler-Gmelin, resigned after creating an uproar by likening Bush's saber-rattling over Iraq to Hitler's use of foreign policy to conceal domestic woes.

They think a politically correct apology will suffice. And I don't think for one moment that they really care. I hear a lot of "background cheering noise" from their cohorts, who know how hollow the apology was.

I just checked their website (and threw up) and there is no apology on their site. Who did they apologize to, the reporters at Reuters?

Moveon.org should be shut down as a hate group.

Careful, careful. That's the last thing we want. Not just because MoveOn.org's acidic spew turns off a lot of undecideds.

But also, we conservatives have to resist the suggestion that someone doesn't have a right to even this kind of hateful speech. We're can sink to the level of the PC liberal left who labels any opinion they don't agree with as "hate", and use that an excuse to promote censorship.

"None of these was our ad," - Wes Boyd

I do not think that Mr. Boyd was an English Major.

Actually I live in GA and saw the ad you are wrongly describing more times than I'd like to have to sit through anything about old Max. There was no morphing of the two nor was there a comparison of the two men in either nature of mindset. The two were linked in the ad by Max's own words about Bin Laden and his feeling that we needed to be"patient" and go the UN for guidance. The facts are rather important in this comparison.

In my personal experience, I have never once heard a conservative call a liberal Hilter or a Nazi, though both are frequently thrown around by liberals. I can call you a communist, because of your political views on society, without refering to you as Stalin.

If move.on had any class, they would not have allowed a comparsion to be made at all and rejected it out of hand as they should a kiddie porn entry.

All that being said, I think most conservatives can handle the pathetic approach and I favor conservatives taking the gloves off and giving it right back. I'd like to see an interview with an actual survivor of a concentration camp tell how they feel about the comparison. I have to keep in mind this is the same party that put an ad on the DNC website of Bush pushing an elderly person down a hill in a wheelchair. Hard to argue with that powerful intellectual arguement.

You're right. Their only regret is that they've been exposed to folks who don't buy into their silly contest. In re-reading I also note that they more or less blame the web sites' "members".

I didn't see the post until this morning so I missed it. I was a subscriber to moveon.org as a result of a post someone made here. I visited the site once and unsubb'd. Too demonic. Have you every heard/seen so much venom in your life? What happened to the liberals and their "love-in" approach? Did it die when their master crafter of sex on the Oval Office was impeached and they had to learn that love was separate from sex (depending on what the definition of "is" is)?

Agreed, 3 million my ass. The following is from the Moveon.org response to the backlash:

"The two ads in question are from more than a thousand posted by members of the public, and they were voted on by MoveOn members through December 31st. Obviously the few hundred of you who viewed these ads agreed that they were not worthy of further broadcast or recognition, because they got low ratings. Yesterday we announced the 15 finalists"
