6 million US jobs to move to India

January 05, 2004 12:32 IST

India is likely to benefit from the exodus of high tech jobs from North America as over 6 million jobs are expected to shift overseas in a decade.

"In the next decade, as many as 6 million jobs might be sent to India and other nations by US companies in search of lower costs and a tech-savvy, English-speaking workforce," Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said in a recent report.

India and Outsourcing: Complete Coverage "The shift of North American technology jobs to low wage countries like India cannot be stopped because not only are Indian companies a third of the cost, but they actually are better," said Pradeep Sood, president of Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce.

Indian workers earn as little as one-tenth of their North American counterparts, and India produces 67 per cent more engineers and computer scientists each year than the US, said Sood, suggesting that India should take full advantage of its low salaries and skilled work force.

A number of multinational corporations like Microsoft, Intel, Accenture Ltd and GM Motors have already started taking advantage of cheaper costs in India.

Microsoft, that employs 250 workers in India, is on track to double its workforce to 500 by 2005.

Intel, the global chip giant, has invested $20 million in an Indian customer service centre of Satyam Computer Services Ltd, one of the biggest software makers in the country.

Intel employs about 1,000 people in India and has its largest non-US chip design centre in Bangalore. Accenture Ltd, which manages business computer systems for clients including AT&T company, plans to double its workforce in India to as many as 10,000 by the end of this year.

General Motors Corporation, the world's known auto maker, plans to hire 100 researchers in Bangalore to develop lightweight material and conduct crash tests, according to economic experts in Toronto.

I tell you, university administrators should be dangling from a rope for putting forth the false hope that there is a market for American-trained and -educated engineers and computer scientists.

It might just come to that!!

don't plan on being in the job market -- in any profession -- if you're straight, white, male, American-born and over forty.

You got THAT right!!!

i don't really think they are fooling too many people anymore, alot of EE/CS engineering people flip and do a masters or double major in business, or they go into things like biomedical engineering which is still OK. Just stay away from chips and software.

But a whole bunch of our R&D work is handled here by Indian, Pakistani, and Chinese engineers.

ARe they citizens? If they are Americans then I don't care where they came from as long as they respect the flag and work for America.

"Affirmative Action, Diversity, metrosexuality, and being very liberal are more important job qualifications than merit in W,DC. I swear that I work in the Democrat National Committee's HQ instead of the National Office of a Federal Agency."

LOL! And don't forget -- any Federal/State government agency worker who can string together more than a four-word sentence, AND has an IQ over 70 is a hiring accident....

BTW, how do you retain your sanity? ;-)

Word to the wise: Don't go anywhere near Niagra Falls OR the roof of tall buildings.

The only customer support jobs Dell is bringing back from India are the ones which service Dell's corporate customers. They have said their consumer support center will remain in India.

And since India or Ireland or Israel or any other country where work goes to has to obey US law...

He, he. Will you send the troops to enforce it? Are you going to eradicate organized crime in India, Russia and Sicily with them?

So illegal Indian...
I have yet to meet any illegal Indians, but they would not tell so if they were, would they?

...immigrants...
All I have met have expressed no desire to immigrate; work here yes, but not switch-out the USA with India.

...are coming over here and stealing jobs?
If by stealing you imply working @ 40% of the current rate, then your word {not mine} "stealing" would apply.

I have a aquaintence of mine who grew up in Argentina, served 4 years in the US Army, went to college, obtained an accounting degree, and after a few years on the job was notified that his department was being out sourced to the subcontinent.

Fine. Can I stop paying into the social security system? Why should I pay for some golf-playing, motorhome-driving retired person?
Your basic premise is flawed. The technical workers I know don't drive humvees and own mansions. Many (like me) drive old cars and just try to support their families. The idea that we can export all our technical industrial capacity and magically maintain our standards of living longterm is delusional.

Give it time. If it can't be offshored, there's always the venerable H1-B.

If organised crime hurts those countries business then they will take care of them -- witness how the Russians have cracked down on their oligarchs and the chechens.

Those that are born to wealth, and those that are born to work in Wal-Marts.

Forget about Walmart, Walmart is going to be permanently laying off over 100,000 workers, as soon as they can implement "self check out" at each store. All the baggers and cash register workers will be nothing but a memory like the obsolete gas station attendent of yesteryear who used to give you gas, check your oil and water, and clean your windshield.

You're right, we're seeing that also in grocery stores. Less and less checkers earning only minimum wage....what's next with the factory and IT jobs going overseas?
