I still remember rolling with laughter when Reagan brought all those extra complex bills to the State of the Union speech and stacked them on the desk one-by-one as he explained them. They were piled so high they almost fell over on him.

Which year was this SOTU address? I would love to read, or even better, listen or watch it.

If you were to read "Theodore Rex" I think you would include Teddy Roosevelt in that list as I do. Among his many accomplishments, which are miread, he is the only American President to be awarded both the Nobel Peace Prize (mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War) and the Medal of Honor (for bravery in the face of enemy fire while commanding the assault of Kettle and San Juan Hills).

It was 1988.  I had to do some research to find it.  I actually thought it was earlier in his first term.  Shows how good my memory is.

And here's the excerpt of what I laughed about back then.  I suppose I shouldn't have embellished it quite so much when I said it almost fell over "on him". The stack almost fell over, but he wasn't in any danger. It was stacked up on the table about 2 feet tall.  When he threw the last one on top of the pile, he had to scramble a little to keep the stack from tumbling.  Again, great theater:

The simple but frustrating problem of making expenses match revenues -- something American families do and the federal government can't -- has caused crisis after crisis in this city. Congress shouldn't send another one of these.  No -- and if you do, I will not sign it."

Please before you spout your mouth off; go to the building labeled a library and read some books for about twenty years. Put the radio down, shut off the voice that does your thinking. And learn to think for yourself. Cleveland was so hated that he got voted in again to clean up the mess created by Benjamin Harrison (a true spendocrat). And it was Republicans that put the Democrat Cleveland into the presidency in the first place. They were called Mugwumps. I think the closest politico related to Bill Clinton was the great Republican twit named Warren Harding. What is it with Presidents from State of Ohio; if they don't die in office they're Fat, Dumb, and Stupid.

Touchy aren't we? I can't believe you're so fired up because I desparaged a President from 110 years ago!!! What I said about Cleveland is just as much a matter of history as what you said. Bill Clintoon was elected twice and probably would have gone on to a third term (gag) just like Cleveland, had it not been for our Constitution (hooray). My point was, there were scandals involving Cleveland and scandals involving Clintoon. The Republican Platform circa 1894 could have been used almost verbatim in 1994 and the results of the election in 1994 were the same as in 1894. Republicans took over both houses of Congress. Republicans then went on to win something like 9 of the next 11 Presidential elections. That's history. What these people actually stood for, what the actually did while in office, I'd have to take your word for. At this stage, I don't care. Political history is rewritten so much, I don't know what to believe about past officeholders, especially from over 100 years ago. But my description of what happened electorally (sp?) still stands. AND I STILL HOPE HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF in having a Republican House, Senate AND Presidency for the next 9 or 10 election cycles (at least). That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I still can't believe you're so ready to fight about a 110 year old election. I hope you translate that fiestyness into dislike for what the liberals are doing today. Otherwise it's a terrible waste of energy.

There was no scandal with Cleveland. During his run for election, the Republicans got wind of an illegitimate child fathered by Cleveland "ala Democrats and a DUI". Cleveland admitted to it and it died. At the time, Cleveland was a bachelor. How that is different from Clinton is the fact he didn't lie, he wasn’t married at the time and there was a child involved (that was supported by Cleveland)?

BTW, Cleveland vetoed 414 bills in his first term, more than double the 204 vetoes cast by all previous presidents. Cleveland used his veto powers 584 times during his two terms. That is the way to stop rampant government spending and slowing down the regulatory monster.
