JUSTICE LEAGUE

Posted on 01/02/2004 8:21:58 AM PST by 7thson

I thought I would create a harmless post and ask if any of you watch Justice League on the Cartoon Channel? I usually watch it with my grandsons. Last nights episode dealt with the villians using mind control to manipulate the heros feelings towards one another, causing the JL to break up. As usual, as the end, the heroes unite and kick arse. I like a couple things about the episode. At the end, one of the villians goes to punch Batman when Superman appears and stops him. After Batman ties up the villian he begins to say that he did not need any help when Superman looks at him and demands "What!" Batman bites his tongue and says thank you. Then at the end when the Flash tries to rationlize that the things they said to and about each other was under mind control, Jonn Jonz makes the point of saying that every statement was meant. The look on Flash's face, the way it was drawn, the depressed slump of the shoulders - I thought the entire story was emphasized with that ending.

JLA is one of the best written shows animation or live action on any network, my favorite so far is the episode where Superman gets sent to the future and has to fix it along with the immortal villian to get back to the present. the redemption scene at the end is just great.

Mxyztplk

What a great hockey name. That would look excellent on a jersey. Almost as good as Ruotsalainen.

Most of the episodes I have really enjoyed. My all time favorite is when the Manhunters come and take John Stewart aka Green Lantern. The battle scene at the end with the JL goind against the Manhunters was intense.

My one beef with the program is that they always show Superman getting knocked around by virtual nobodies. I read that the creators were going to change that but thus far I have yet to see any change. Yesterday's episode with Superman though was pretty cool. In one scene he is using his heat vision and tells everyone to fall back. They ignore him and HawkGirl has one of her wings singed as a consequence. When he challenges Batman after helping him, you can not help but like this pissed off Superman.

Years ago, in the comic 'magazine' world, when Frank Miller created the Dark Knight, that forever changed the relationship between Superman and Batman. That was shown in last nights episode with Superman fed up with Batman's theatrics and aloofness.

Superman has one frustrating weakness other than kryptonite, he can be everywhere at once.

It is a good series. I agree with you about miller's Dark Knight. However, comic books have suffered from the same left tilt as a TV programing. (recent JLA that paralleled President Luthor with President Bush. They propagandaed a pro-French foreign policy line.)

The animated superheros got new life with, ironically, the Batman animated series. Painted on black paper the series came to life as an early career of Batman.

(BTW I thought the sceen in the wonder girl wedding comic where Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson having the heart to heart about his legally adopting the new robin but not adopting Dick years ago was pretty good. But such gems are "sneaked" in.)

Recounting the really filthy joke I once heard involving Wonder Woman and Superman here would get me booted.

This season is especially well written with all of the characters distinct and fleshed out.

The episode with Dr. Fate (MORE DR FATE!) teaming up with Soloman Grundy and Aquaman to retrieve Grundy’s soul (among other things) was really great. Grundy dying (in as much as a comic book hero/villain can ever die) at the end was handled very well.

I think Hawkgirl is the best written character on the show. She likes to drink and party and she doesn’t much like Wonder Woman. Her relationship with Green Lantern seems realistic and as adult as you can get for Cartoon Network.

But the best show on CN is Big O. It is just brilliant.

In the JL cartoons and the Animated Superman, they usually show him being smacked around for better part of the episode until he gets pissed off and kicks arse. In the animated Superman, my two favorite's are when he met Batman for the first time, and when he replaced Batman after Bruce Wayne was kidnapped by Brainiac. The part where he smacks Bane around while dressed as Batman was cool! I also like the episode where Darkseid comes to take over earth. At the end, the credits pay homage to Jack "the King" Kirby. Very touching.

I agree with you about the left tilt. In the last year or so, I became interested in the Ultimate line by Marvel, basically rewriting the beginnings of XMen, Spiderman, and The Avengers (Ultimates) as if it occurred in todays time vice the early 1960's. I thought they had excellent story lines. However, changing some things such as making Colossus gay and other title changes crossed the line. I remember reading Captain America as a kid and while he was kicking the Red Skulls arse, he would be giving him a verbal tongue lashing as to what America really is/was (the Red Skulls mistaking America's charity for weakness). Now, Cap is doubting the United States. The Rawhide Kid is gay. Also, it looks to me that some of the cover art could pass for soft-core porn.

In the animated series, making Batman more like the Dark Knight was great! While watching my grandsons recently, I caught an old SuperFriends episode. Batman made me want to puke! I keep telling my grandson that the most powerful member of JL is Batman because he has already figured out how to beat them all. He did not believe me until the Amazo episode. When the Andriod assumed the powers of Superman, Batman had a piece of kryponite in his belt. Later, HawkGirl asks him why he carries kryponite and his reply is "in case of an emergency."

Justice League is probably the best written cartoon series on TV right now. My sons and I watch it every Saturday night and during the week as well. We saw that episode as well when it was originally aired a couple of months back. If you like that one, just wait till you see the one where Green Lantern and Hawkgirl kiss! Vavavava-VOOM!!!! (I guess you can't tell Hawkgirl is my favorite huh??)
