Tuesday, December 30, 2003 Mulkey arrested for marijuana possession

Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO -- A Nebraska football player was arrested early Tuesday on marijuana possession and other charges following the Cornhuskers' 17-3 win over Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl.

Grant Mulkey, a redshirt freshman receiver from Arlington, Texas, was also charged with resisting arrest and evading arrest, said San Antonio police spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez. Mulkey did not play in Monday's bowl game.

Mulkey, 19, was also issued a citation for failing to identify himself to officers who took him into custody after a brief struggle in downtown San Antonio.

Gutierrez said officers were called after an altercation near the city's Riverwalk tourist district around 2 a.m.

Witnesses told officers that a group of young men was harassing some women, and they pointed out Mulkey as the instigator, according to the police report.

"When officers approached (Mulkey) and asked him to come back to them, he kept avoiding them," Gutierrez said. "He kept saying, 'Who me? I didn't do anything.'"

Officers eventually ordered Mulkey to the ground, she said, but he refused and then resisted as they tried to subdue him.

A search of the 5-foot-11, 180-pound player during the arrest turned up a plastic bag containing a small amount of marijuana, Gutierrez said.

The search also produced a Nebraska student identification card bearing another person's name, she said. Mulkey told officers at first that the card was his, but he later gave them his Texas driver license with his correct identity.

Mulkey was held until around 11:30 a.m., when he was released on bond.

LOL. I went to his link, and it turns out he didn't play in any game all season!

The commentators mentioned during yesterday's game that Nebraska is going to have to move away from its option style offense if it's going to be competitive, attract good QBs and receivers, etc.

This is Nebraska's first step in bringing back the good ole' traditions so ingrained in their football program. I was wondering when they were going to clean...er...get back to basics.

He's a redshirt freshman. It means he sat out the season and retained the year of eligibility he would otherwise lose riding the bench

Hey, I LIVE in San Antonio -- and I had to suffer through a week of Nebraska and Michigan State fans wandering without a clue through my city.

Maybe the high point of their ignorance came on Sunday morning. I went to noon mass at San Fernando (that's the Spanish mass - it's posted in large letters on a sign at the entrance) only to find it impossible to get a seat due to the large number of flaky midwestern football fans.

Of course many seats did open up once the Persons of Strange Accent realized that they did not speak the language and would be even MORE confused by attending this service.

N-e-b-r-s-k-a?

Hmph.

M-i-c-h-i-g-a-n S-t-a-t-e?

Pttt.

Glad to see them gone...and annoyed to see that they had to leave some of their dope-smoking trash behind.

(And don't get me started over how my Minnesota Golden Gophers were ripped off by the Alamo Bowl selection board)

Mass is said in Spanish throughout the United States. San Antonio - with a population that is over 65% Hispanic - is a city where just about every parish (with the exception of the Stone Oak area) offers at least one service in Spanish.

Don't let Xenophobia, dislike of Catholics or dislike of Mexican-Americans drive ignorance in your posts.

Not a possibility, but a nice diversionary tactic to dodge questions about your military background claims.

There's no way to include a virus in a FReepmail. It's all internal to the FR system.

Cute, though.
