December 30, 2003 -- COULD the winner of "World Idol" turn out to be a plumber with two kids and the face of a lawn gnome?
The real surprise on last week's debut edition of "World Idol" - an ultimate showdown among the winners of 11 "Idol" contests from around the world - was the strong performance of Norwegian Kurt Nilsen.

My teenaged son wandered through during the Nirvana cover and about died laughing that someone was doing Nirvana on an Idol show. I can understand why.....it was definitely a first.

I agree with the majority of what you said -- great comments! Here are my additions:
DIANA (PAN-ARABIC): I'm not familiar with that kind of music, either, but I thought she had a beautiful voice. I would have liked to have heard her sing a Western song to see what she would sound like.
ALEX (POLAND): I thought she had a great voice but didn't know how to use it or how to control it. I think with some vocal coaching she could improve a great deal. (I agree about Nicki, LOL!)
GUY SEBASTIAN(AUSTRALIA): Really bad song choice. It didn't show off his voice at all and I thought it was boring.
WILL YOUNG (UK): The video clips they showed of him singing sounded better than his Christmas night performance.
...there was one shot of Simon laughing that was used twice in the program... Yeah, but you can never have too much Simon, LOL!

A world idol from Norway? Who would have thought. Reminds me of the world's false peace idol... OSLO.
Actually, this guy is from Bergen, which is "the city between the seven mountains".
Imagine that...

Although the polish girl was not quite up to par, the polish judge was a riot...I loved how even his homeland contestant hated him. Obviously he's cut in the Simon mold.

Agree with most of your assessment. How do you know that Kelly was sick? That would stand to reason--as she was listening to the judges rate her performance, I asked my son if something was wrong with her--tho' they were praising her, she looked so sad.

the Polish judge was great--without the brash/annoying people saying outrageous things the show wouldn't be half as much fun.

I only heard him at the recap they did at the end of the show.
Hardly anything to write home about.
Kelly was way better.

Based on the comments here, maybe I have my people mixed up or the end recap didn't do him justice.

Congrats to Kurt Nilsen.
I have not been watching this (I really only watch the first few shows when the idiots embarrass themselves)
But I watched the final because of this thread.
Kurt was great, I was impressed.
