Wow,
The King of Hearts (Le Roi de Couer) was my favorite movie for a very long time.
I was a fan of Alan Bates.

What a loss to the stage and screen. I've always enjoyed his craft.

Was very good in "The Rose" "The Dresser" "Unmarried Woman". I shall miss his acting prescence. He must have been schooled in acting in the British style. If nothing else, England has the theater, great actors and other theatrical talent.

Another of the many fine English actors of the 1960s.
Butley was particulary good (though the film could have been more cinematic and less theatrical).
An Englishman Abroad was also good (though Alan Bennett's script was too sympathetic to the spy Bates played).
Alan Bates brought a lot of talent and enthusiasm to all his roles. He did some fine work in television versions of the classics as well.
