WASHINGTON -- The Federal Election Commission has declared Rep. Dennis Kucinich qualified to receive federal matching funds, making the Ohio congressman eligible for up to $18.6 million, the FEC said Wednesday.
Candidates must meet FEC requirements to qualify, including raising a threshold amount of $100,000 by collecting $5,000 in 20 different states in amounts no greater than $250 from any individual.
They also must agree to an overall spending limit, abide by spending limits in each state, use public funds only for legitimate campaign-related expenses, keep financial records, and permit an extensive campaign audit.
The FEC said in a statement that Kucinich contributions from the following states were verified for threshold purposes: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
Of the nine Democrats seeking the nomination, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean and Sen. John Kerry have decided not to seek matching funds. President Bush also has declined to accept federal funding.
Beginning in January, the U.S. Treasury Department will pay FEC-certified amounts to qualified campaigns.

What an absolute total waste of money! And a slap in the face to hard-working Americans who can only stand on the sidelines and watch our hard-earned tax dollars just being flushed down the toilets. BAH HUMBUG!

Those 3 dollars are deducted from taxes that are due or already paid; an additional 3 dollars is not collected. So 3 dollars that would have been directed to the DOD or the DOT or the DEA or some other alphabet soup grouping are directed elsewhere. As our elected officials have demonstrated numerous times in the past, the government is incapable of doing without, so the 3 dollars lost for this boondoggle are made up elsewhere. Want to guess where? That's right, higher taxes or deficit spending, which means it will have to be repaid. How you ask? By my tax dollars, that's how.
There is no such thing as a free lunch.

The only Constitutional source of funds for political office holders everywhere and in every office in the United States, is directly from the people or private associations they may form for the purpose of raising such funds.
No other funding is Constitutional.
This is not a nation of "everybody's politics are equally valid."
Because they are most definitely not, when a body bothers to examine the horrors produced by socialism over the last century --- several tens of millions of people dead.
Yet, in the near future here, when socialists prevail to the point of controlling all the branches of the federal government, I can guarantee that they will end the funding from the federal government that enabled their rise to over-power it.

Boy, now *there's* a complete waste of taxpayer cash. Not of the magnitude that Bush is wasting our cash to buy votes, but a total waste nonetheless.

I would gladly give him 10 times this amount if he were to win the primary. This guy is more looney than Dean (if that's possible). Even the rats won't vote for this guy.

ditto (post #8) to YOU! It's still wasted taxpayer $$$$...no matter how you look at it! And we NEVER check the $3 box on our tax returns...even though doing so won't result in a reduction of our refund/nor an increase in taxes owed. It's just one more waste of tax $$$, period.
