Floridians are allowed to carry concealed weapons if they sit through a two-hour lecture and show an instructor they can handle a gun safely. Should a concealed-weapons permit be so easy to get?

Yes. Very few people with concealed-weapons permits have been charged with gun-related crimes.

No. People should not be allowed to carry guns unless they demonstrate a real need.

And this is a follow-on from yesterday's article they had printed stating in the headlines that is "just a 2 hr class" while burying the facts that candidates are fingerprinted & photographed.

This poll is VERY misleading and deceptive (but then again, this is the behaviour of most liberal newspapers).

We need to Freep this poll badly and contact them to do a retraction of yesterday's lying article.

So in 2 days worth of work they are making Floridian CCW holders out to just mere "Classroom Sitters"? We need to protest!!!

Class covers

1. Gun permit doesn't make you a cop
2. Carry a cell phone so you can call if you see something happening, rather than butting in.
3. You must try to evade/escape when confronted with danger if you are not in your home
4. Gun permit gives you no rights to use weapon illegally.
5. Dead is dead. If you shoot someone, it is forever.
6. Weapon safety, ammo choice, downrange considerations, etc.

BTW, law also requires clean record, no guns in schools, bars, airports, government buildings, etc.

IMHO any veteran with a small arms marksmanship (pistol) should be issued a CCW without the class instruction. I believe the classes are excellent ideas because there are some folks that are not intelligent enough to know the basics and need to have them reiterated.

BTW the two hour class is good. It covers all the basic of where and when. It covers the legalities.

If they are going to have a longer class then perhaps it should include actual shooting. We could use paper targets in the shapes of famous communists.

BTW, instructor failed one woman in our class. She had no idea how to handle weapon, even after some training, and thought she could shoot someone if "he spoke to her as she was changing tire on a dark street in a bad part of town." (her exact quote)
