A view of the heavily damaged ancient citadel in the devastated southeastern Iranian city of Bam. The 2,000-year-old citadel, the largest mud-brick structure in the world, was almost completely destroyed in the quake(AFP/Atta Kenare)

True! We have many proven, dedicated assets in Iran, and we shouldn't let them suffer when they need us. Hugs to those who sacrificed and trusted us so much during so many years of terrible international confusion, ignorance and pain.

...need to get the aid there as quickly as possible with all security considerations taken.

I can't look at it. It's like looking at the empty holes where the statues of Bamyan used to be. It's almost as though God is saying "Don't look back, look forward"

Yes and it is so sad to see that the Human heritage is destroyed. It also belongs to all of us.

What a beautiful place! Iranians need to dump Islam, convert to another religion (anything will be an improvement), return the glories and greatness of Persia, and join the world of the 21st century. Face it: Islam is a dead end--in more ways than one.

Thanks for the side-by-side before and after pics.
Offhand I'd say that however they built those arches and those walls (so long ago) should be duplicated. I suspect the still-standing walls begin at a depth well below what is visible.
Of course, they really need to be using different material, or at least retro-fitting with steel re-inforcement.
Too late for Bam and its inhabitants though, very sad.

The loss of history is secondary to the loss of life yet we can mourn for both.

Absolutely.

Such a beautiful ancient city! I thought I heard on the radio today that they fear the death toll may go to 40,000 and I am hoping I heard wrong.

Very sad. May God comfort the lost.

That truly is a shame- such a beautiful place. Amazing it has withstood hundreds of years of earthquakes- until now.

Arg-e-Bam was indeed a beautiful city. Hopefully the magnificent palace and walls can be reconstructed.

My sympathies to the Iranian people on the loss of life in this tragedy.
