In all seriousness, this makes sense. It would destroy the economy of that city and devestate air travel for two more years. Now the question is, did this person get access to a cargo plane. God help us if he or she did.In all seriousness, what is there in Vegas that a plane can purposely hit? And just how crowded is Vegas at this time of year?

MGM Grand = 5034 rooms
It is packed from this week through New Years Eve. Not to mention because of the approach you have to take to land in Las Vegas, most planes are less than 2 miles from the strip. It would devestate the economy there and the U.S. severely.

Well, to be honest, some of the shows in Vegas have 2000-3000 people in one building, and it would be connected to a hotel/resort. (I'm thinking of one in particular...) and it would devestate the local and regional economy for years.

I know about 15 people going to Vegas between Dec. 30 and Jan 6; 10 in one group and 5 in another. Relatives (10)and close friends. (couple and their triplets who just turned 21.)
You couldn't pay me to go to Vegas over New Year's Eve.

National Finals Rodeo just finished up there with a 10 day run. Every night is always a sell-out. Tickets and room packages are gone by Feb 1 almost every year. Last night the Las Vegas Bowl was held, Oregon State Beavers against New Mexico Lobos. Osu 55 NM 7? I think? That game was in Sam Boyd stadium, an open top field. Would have made a great target for terrorists. I don't know the seating capacity, but it was well lit up and the night was very clear.
Christmas in Las Vegas is a great place if you are single or have no kids. The rooms aren't as pricey as New Years, and everything is open. Food is a wide range, along with lots of entertainment. So to answer you, Las Vegas can be very crowded this time of year, with all the game attendees and the others.

And just how crowded is Vegas at this time of year?Vegas is especially mobbed this time of year, but really... it's the perfect terror target 24/7, 365. All a suicide pilot has to do is follow the lights, and he'll take out thousands -- no matter the time or the date.
Not to mention to economic impact, local and national. It would be a devestating blow on every level.

There is plenty to hit here, all near the airport. Large hotels.

Maybe that big glass pyramid casino (I think it's the Luxor). They could potentially see it as a desecration of Arab culture.

There was a Football bowl game last night. Now that can hold 50-100,000 people.

The
nuclear storage area at nearby Nellis Air Force Base might be an interesting target. Or it might not be.
There've been as many as 200 warheads in storage there at one time. But there might not be any there now.
If this is a dry run or rehearsal for a LAX-bound flight's hijacking, I can certainly think of a better target.

In all seriousness, what is there in Vegas that a plane can purposely hit? And just how crowded is Vegas at this time of year? The strip will be absolutely jam-packed at 12:00 - the figure I heard was around 250,000 people.

Lots of big hotels, the Hoover Dam, stuff like that are in and around Las Vegas. It's great. You should go there sometime. But seriously, they could go for the Hoover Dam and cut off electricity out there and worse. Or, they could go to Prrrrrrumph, NV.
