"In all seriousness, what is there in Vegas that a plane can purposely hit?"

MGM Grand = 5034 rooms
It is packed from this week through New Years Eve. Not to mention because of the approach you have to take to land in Las Vegas, most planes are less than 2 miles from the strip. It would devestate the economy there and the U.S. severely.

I haven't been there in a *loooong* time, but I thought that business is slow pre-Christmas, and usually picks up a day or so after.

Yep. The MGM Grand was the one I was thinking of. On some nights, the theatre attached has a show going on, and the amount of people in the casino and theatre would be close to 5000 people (and this wouldn't include anyone in the hotel.)
