.
SPECULATION:
Key Terrorist Organizers die in flight on way to Islamic Home Base. Their Anti-US plans thwarted by CIA operatives. Note to Terriorists: "Plan to kill Americans using Aircraft...then you should avoid flying." Or as we say in the US..."People who live in Glass Houses shouldn't throw rocks".

Looked like maybe an old 727.
To: skraeling
I just typed what FoxNews reported (747). Always in these breaking news events, the information changes as details come in.

Not a 747. That has four engines, two on each wing. Looks like a 727. Wasn't one stolen months ago in Africa?
To: skraeling
The L1011 center is mounted a little differently.

Not a 727, imo. Definitely not a 747

The one stolen was retrofitted--passenger seating was replaced with bulk liquid tanks (fuel or chemical).
Last report I saw on it, it was supposedly somewhere in north Africa and "may" be being used for cargo transport.

I'll go back to my original DC-9 or equiv. Looks like an engine side mount, not a tail IMHO.
To: skraeling
Could be. It would be a long way for a DC-9 to Beirut from there I would think.
To: Rome2000
Cannot be 747. I've flown into/out of Cotonou, the runway is nowhere near long enough for a 747. When landing, the AF Airbus?? I was on barely braked in time to avoid going off the end of the runway into the drink (my closest brush with a carrier-style landing (I hope)). Benin has a lot of Lebanese expatriates, they fled the ME to West Africa in the '80's, and now they are the 'merchant class' in those countries - i.e. they own/run most of the (non-government) business.
To: TomGuy
Right. That picture is of the center engine air intake of an older 727-100. Probably around 40 years old.
To: Dragthor
Something tells me whatever happened occured during takeoff.

MSNBC said it would go via Dubai. DC-9 kind of route?
To: nightdriver
Bingo. Clearly from both pictures an old 727. Were it a DC-10, there would be a larger ratio between cabin width and the engine intake, and the DC-10 has very large cockpit windows, whereas those on the crashed jet are smaller by comparison.

I'd almost guarantee it is a 727. The window configuration in the cockpit area in the crash photo is correct for a 727.
The other photo shows rear mounted engines. It is a 727.

I agree, the network is probably wrong on the 747:
Flight: Air Senegal Intl flight 701 on a Boeing 737-200 Jet
Flight: Bellview Airlines flight 259 on a Boeing 737 Jet
Middle East Air flight 572 on an Airbus Industrie Jet
