New theory for Iraq's missing WMD: Saddam was fooled into thinking he had them

Richard Norton-Taylor and Julian Borger in Washington Wednesday December 24, 2003 The Guardian

British officials are circulating a story that Saddam Hussein may have been hoodwinked into believing that Iraq really did possess weapons of mass destruction. The theory, which is doing the rounds in the upper reaches of Whitehall, is the result of an attempt to find what one official source called a "logical reason" why no chemical and biological weapons had been found in Iraq.

Yep certainly those Kurd and Iranians were also "fooled" into believing Iraq had WMD? He used them, duh. He had them.

That's kind of stretching the point a little. Everybody knows that chemical weapons were used by both sides in the Iraq-Iran war. Bush said Hussein has WMD's NOW, and they will use them if we don't stop him NOW. NOW has arrived and passed and there have been no WMD's found. NOW you are omitting that fact, trying to use that omission to make a point that is no longer a valid argument.

The Guardian is behind. This "new" theory has been out there for months.

We're not done looking. We've certainly looked under the
main rock, that is "Iraq". We still need to look under the
other nearby rocks: "Syria", "Iran", "Lebanon".

a point that is no longer a valid argument.

Can you cite the vast amount of evidence that should have convinced Bush, the UN and the rest of us that Saddam didn't have them? Hmmmm?

I agree with Fledermaus. This isn't just not a new theory, it's been around since probably before the statue fell. Old, old, old news. And not much more convincing today than it was back then.

Sometimes, it just appears people are plain stupid, or there is some propaganda value in all this rot. What we do know publicly is bad enough.

Iraq under Saddam spent untold millions on all types of chemical and biological weapons. He claims that they were all destroyed. Unfortunately, he declined to prove this.

A more probable explanation is that they are cached or secreted away to another country, or quite possibly some were made available to groups like Al-Queda. Ironically, when the "antiwar" types ask "Where's the WMD"? they may one day soon find out the hard way just exactly where they are.

This is all well and good in theory, but it's going to fall to pieces when the US starts showing all the Satellite pics we have of the trucks from Iraq going into Syria.

What is completely more believable is that Saddam, due to a sudden attack of conscience, destroyed all the WMD's he was known to have without bothering to get any credit for it from the UN - thereby passing up the chance to loosen sanctions - then completely forgot about it...../sarcasm

Maybe in a pig's eye...and from a 'Rat's ass perspective.

There are millions of acres of sand in Iraq. They will be found someday when everyone has given up looking for them. They were buried someplace & everyone who was involved in hiding them was shot. Uday & Cusay are dead so the WMD will stay hidden until someone stumbles across them by accident.

Saddam was a "goal" seeker. In the early days of Phase II of Desert Storm, i.e., the enforcement of the treaty, papers of Uday and Qusay (sp) indicated that Saddam was still seeking to conquer. Being such a hater of Israel pointed in that direction.

The fact that he paid monies to the wonderful families of Palestinians whose sons and daughters were stupid enough to blow themselves up to get a few more Jews off the earth, tells us that Saddam was not done "goal seeking".

The gleefulness of his speeches after 9-11, the space disaster, the mock of our entry into Iraq says Saddam is what he is...a man with bad intentions to his own people and people all over the world.

If we haven't already done so, we need to shift a significant portion of the Saddam reward money to Iraqi's that come forward with tips on their location.

If Saddam rose and maintained power for decades in a country that produces genetic liars like Baghdad Bob, he had to have perfect pitch to recognize when he was being lied to. This is too big a lie to keep from a successful dictator.
