I suspect we will be getting these warnings around Christmas time for years, perhaps decades to come.Guaranteed overtime pay for the unionized TSA drone always comes in handy this time of year.

I doubt the terrorists really care a lick about US politics and who the President is. Ya think? If I was a terrorist, I sure would have preferred the way the previous administration responded to attacks.

Agreed. A strike at Christmas goes to the heart of American life. I do not have flight plans and plan to be in smalltown USA over the holidays. Did they go Ernie over the last two Christmas seasons? I'm not sure, I do not believe we went to orange last xmas. If I am recalling correctly it has been over a year since the level was raised? Maybe someone has some better info on that. I still think xmas is a tough time to pull something off, but we do have christmas and chanukah overlapping this year, so the next few days would be prime times to hit both religions fundamentalists to so much.

Why doesn't NYC pay for it's own damn security, and let us country folks take care of ourselves?

Is Al Franken getting ready to do another press junket? The combined threat of the 2 Als, Al Franken and Al Queda could have warranted this increase.
All I know is my undershorts just went to a code brown...

Yes, NYC has been orange since 9/11/01 and for that reason is likely one of the safer cities to be in. If nothing else, this raise is going to be a huge hit economically... bad time to go to orange, especially with stores already hard hit by 2 weekends of snowstorms in the northeast.

I don't know why you think this is so funny.
Most intelligent people realize that these security alert levels are not intended for the population as much as for our Homeland Security apparatus, which includes everthing from police, to firefighters, to border control, to every other involved agent.
Threat level makes a major difference in the way our HS apparatus is required to increase communication, increase/guarantee staffing levels, put backup systems in place, etc.
Our defense plan attempts to pull together all threat assessment information into one place, and make a determination as to what level of readiness we must counter it with. It makes sense to me and I don't know another better plan. Maybe you have a magic wand to make the bad guys go away.
You might find it humorous but so far we have not had a 2nd 9-11 and unless you have a better plan to propose than one stuff it. /rant

Maybe that's one reason why there has been a lot of chatter? Is AQ knowledgeable enough about our financial systems to know the results of threats in $?

So what are we supposed to do?Avoid subways, airlines, football bowl games. Better yet, hide under the bed untill after New Year's.

We are supposed to PAY ATTENTION to what's going on around us. If you notice suspicious or weird activity (such as Middle Eastern men fiddling with a car in a mall parking lot) you should call the police.
If you notice strange people cradling something bulky under their coats as they enter a shopping mall, go to security and ask them to check.
Make sure your home is well-supplied, and pay attention to the news.
