While touring Westminster Abbey in 1998, as I passed the burial nitch of Oliver Cromwell, I spat upon his grave. I could hear the sighs of approbation of 20 generations of my forebearers as my spittle hit the ground.

Can't blame Elizabeth herself much for the bad stuff that happened. She was not the mposnter her father was nor the vixen her mother was. And growing up in Henry's household must have been aweful. Mary, I have read, showed her opinion of her father by having his remains dumpted into the Thames.

What went on in Spain is another matter however...

Not that much different. It was an 800 year effort to drive the Mohammedans out of the Iberian peninsula.

The great majority of Catholices executed by Elizabath were for "treason," even though most, like the Jesuit Edmund Campion, were really killed for their faith.

Only in the sense that the al-Qa'ida supporters of Osama Bin Laden are "killed for their faith".

They were jihadists following the order of Pius V to overthrow and kill Elizabet.

How many Catholics were killed by Cromwell? About .001 percent of the number of Christians of all denominations that were wiped out by atheist or pagan governments in the 20th Century.

No, I don't blame Elizabeth at all.

By the way, I don't think any serious person thinks Henry's remains were thrown into the river.

and was Protestant only

H8 never was much of a Protestant. He was fundamentally a Catholic king who had a bad beef with the Pope. After all, it was the Pope who named him a "Defender of the Faith," for his writings against the Protestants.

Later on, the Calvinist Puritans, and the other "heretical," sects tried to take over the Church of England, and succeeded in driving it farther from "Papist" orthodoxy, under first his son, and then Elizabeth when she took over from Bloody Mary's ill-fated and harsh Catholic revival.

H8 did have to snuff out a rebellion or two over the matter, and then made a fortune for his family and friends, confiscating church lands and wealthy monasteries.

Then, of course, there is the tragic case of Lady Jane Grey, a serious-ass babe with twice the brains of everyone around her. Grey was gifted with a brilliant, analytical mind--probably would have been an uberElizabeth Rex. Problem was she was a proto-Puritan taking her religious beliefs seriously. Grey lasted six days until Mary seized the reigns of power.

A friend of mine photographed the Latin puns she put up on the walls of her cell before her execution. Grey was the one figure in that period who could have changed the course of European history.

MAry "siezed" the reigns of power because she was the rightful heir. Even Elizabeth I knew that.

Relax. All sides burned their fair share of dissenters in Christian times. Check out the story of the Spanish priest Servetus, who was condemned to death as a heretic in Rome. He fled to Basle for refuge, only to be arrested and burned at the stake by Calvin's church, perhaps for not being the right kind of heretic, or not being heretical enough!

Sometimes, ya just can't catch a break!

I don't believe the "Cromwell" referred to in the original article posted was OLIVER Cromwell...it was Lord Chancellor THOMAS Cromwell. So you may have been spitting on the wrong dude. :)

After 500 years of deliberate disinformation, you may find this interesting: The Truth About the Spanish Inquisition.

Dude, that's very selective history. As a Sephardi myself, I can tell you I've encountered numerous people who were RAISED as Anusim/Morranos/Conversos. Yes, they stayed secret Jews for 500 years. There were entire villages in Portugal and Latin America of hidden Jews. The vast majority of conversos, at least originally, were not sincere converts but Jews forced into Catholicism by persecution.

Also, the total number of pre-expulsion Jews in Spain was more like 250,000.

Henry VIII is buried at Windsor, in St. George's Chapel. He's not in the river.

You're right that it's hard to tell who was executed for what by Elizabeth's time - the lawyers were busy. But other than a very few high profile cases, it would be hard at this juncture to tease out those who were "really" executed for something else. In Campion's case it's easy to tell, but that's not true for most.
