Libya 'to give up WMD'

Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi has said his country sought to develop weapons of mass destruction capabilities but will dismantle this programme completely, Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced. "This decision is an historic one and a courageous one and I applaud it," Mr Blair said.

Colonel Gaddafi had told him the process of dismantling the programme would be "transparent and verifiable", the prime minister said in a statement from Durham Cathedral.

The range of all Libya's missiles would be restricted to "no more then 300km, he added.

Mr Blair said Britain had been engaged in talks with Libya for nine months.

"Libya came to us in March following successful negotiations on Lockerbie to see if it could resolve its weapons of mass destruction issue in a similarly cooperative manner," he said.

Totally agree that this week is one heck of a week for President Bush. The dims are finished with all these unilateralist claims, and isn't it amazing that Libya started to talk about disarmament right at the time we kick Saddam's butt - me sure the left will argue this Khadafy thing belongs to the work of the Clinton diplomacy team - no matter how weak that link, if exist at all, might be.

I think Pres Bush is making his place in the history books. He seems to want the world to be better, he seems to know intuitively how to get it done and he wants no credit. The man doesn't have an ounce of narcissism. I keep thinking, we are so very lucky. So much is going on under the surface that we don't know and I will bet the story is unbelievable, probably a cliff hangar. Me thinks the stakes are so much higher than we know. I do wonder why Khadaffy is so spooked by the US taking out Saddam (either that or eager to "play nice" in order to improve its standing with other entities besides South Africa and the U.N.). You'd think he'd be happy that Syria and Iran were closer to Iraq than Libya.
