Foul-mouthed and unrepentant: Saddam Hussein at bay
By David Usborne in New York
19 December 2003
Iraqis stampeded to news stands yesterday to buy copies of a newspaper showing the humiliation of their captured former leader, Saddam Hussein.
The edition of Al-Mutamar was sold out in Baghdad by noon. The photograph shows Saddam with Ahmed Chalabi, one of his oldest foes and now on the Iraqi Governing Council. Four Council members went to meet him on Sunday after he had been cleaned up. They said he was foul-mouthed and unrepentant.
"He would not apologise to the Iraqi people," Mr Chalabi said. "He did not deny any of the crimes he was confronted with having done. He tried to justify them."
The visitors were shocked when one asked Saddam why he had murdered the world's leading Shia cleric, Muhammad Bakr al-Sadr, in 1980. He replied with a dismissive joke. The word sadr means "chest" in Arabic, and Saddam replied: "Al Sadr or Ar Rijil?" That translates as "The chest or the foot?"
Asked about the mass graves of Iraqis uncovered since he was toppled, Saddam answered: "Ask their relatives. They were thieves."

At his trial I hope they replay the scenes to him on a big screen of Saddam getting his mouth checked and his hair checked for lice. They should play that at the beginning of every court session. Also they need to make sure Saddam is dressed in striped prison pajamas. No allowing him to dress in a suit like they allow the perps here to do.
