That would just be bizarre. He's in the same age range as the jurist that would step down due to age...

That's if this article is correct and Hatch is stepping down immediately, rather than continuing for the rest of the term.
Assuming that's the case...that is an interesting take. They did a similar thing by making Specter the point man in exposing Hill and getting Thomas confirmed...Specter nearly lost his next election because of it.

Hatch was born 3/22/1934. He's younger than Rehnquist (b. 1924), Stevens (b. 1920), O'Connor (b. 1930) and Ginsburg (b. 1933), but older than Scalia, Kennedy, Souter, Breyer, and Thomas.
It's not likely that there will be any vacancies before 2005, unless someone dies or becomes very ill. It would probably be impossible to get someone confirmed in an election year. On the other hand, Hatch's age might cause the Democratic opposition to be less ferocious, if they don't expect him to be on the Court long.

I like Toomey, and I remain a little ambivalent about Specter. For a long time my Dad managed one of the largest office buildings in Philadelphia and Arlen was one of his tenants. Arlen even introduced his father to my Dad shortly before the senior Specter passed away. Call me sentimental, but my Dad liked Arlen and he has good judgment, so I've always given Arlen the benefit of the doubt myself.
In any event, I remember Arlen being an effective point man in killing Hillary-care, and he was brilliant during the Thomas hearings where he exposed Anita Hill and that corrupt woman judge from California as liars. I agree - - Specter was instrumental in getting Clarence Thomas through. And that's big in my book.

thanx..see post #42. Looks like it's a GOP rule, not a senate rule.

Hatch on the SC would be worse than Spector as Judiciary Chairman.

( I find it very interesting that when the heat got on, you dug yourself a hole and you crawled in it)
