If re-elected [Hatch], he also would step down as head of the Judiciary Committee because of GOP term limitations for chairmanships. Instead, he would become chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

Republican members...
Orrin G. Hatch UTAH
Charles E. Grassley IOWA
Arlen Specter PENNSYLVANIA
Jon Kyl ARIZONA
Mike DeWine OHIO
Jeff Sessions ALABAMA
Lindsey Graham SOUTH CAROLINA
Larry Craig IDAHO
Saxby Chambliss GEORGIA
John Cornyn TEXAS

Bottom line. There are exactly 9 Republicans who would be better than Specter as chairman.

My wife agrees with you on Hatch appointment to the SCOTUS...

After what's been happening lately, I think all his "good friends on the other side" would screw him.

Something tells me that Focus on the Family has gotten their wires crossed.

In the next Senate, Hatch will step down as committee chair. They have term limits on them or something like that.

And they assign chairs on the basis of seniority, so if the Republicans hold the Senate and Specter is in the Senate, he's it.

But I do not believe that Hatch is stepping down now, or before next year's elections, or before the Senate conveins after next year's elections.

Hatch has ALWAYS been unreliable - on gun ownership, on abortion, on any part of a conservative's agenda.

What's happened to Bush's top judicial nominees?

Can't imagine Arlen Sphincter being much worse.

Ok. BUT, does it have to go to the next person in line? Or can the Majority Leader pick someone who he thinks would be more in line with what he (and the President) want in that position?

I would have liked to have seen Jeff Sessions take over instead.

You know that reminds me of the girl I used to hang with who was James' NYC area stop for a quickie when they were first starting and we called him 'Pizzaface'. Can't provide anymore details since I don't know if the statute of limitations has run out yet. ;-)

That's my concern. It's seems odd that this "breaking story" would come through Focus on the Family -- I'm not finding any talk about this from any other news sources.

Lord, God, PLEASE remove Specter from the public stage, from office, from any public influence whatsoever ASAP. And replace him with a very conservative, balanced, rational Republican. In Jesus' Name.

Jeff Sessions take over instead.

That would burn the Dims soooooo bad! The guy who was rejected comes back to chair the committee.

It is amazing how all committees that really matter have milktoast chairmen that cave too easily to the lefts manipulations.

When the committee need to be focused on strategy on memogate, They are now "redecorating".

I dont' know but they do have a pecking order as do most organizations where senority rules.......

Not to worry.... It's happens in 05 when the 109th Congress is seated.... Toomey may oust Specter and he'd not be the one.

I'm STUNNED! Not that Orrin was a fire-breathing dragon.......but SPECTER!

This further decreases my confidence in the leadership of the Republican Party. This should NOT have been allowed to happen; The Stupid Party is asleep at the switch again!

I think they are jumping the gun about a year. He isn't slated to step down until the end of the 108th congress or that's my understanding..... I think this article has misread something.....

If Hatch is becoming chair of the finance committee, doesn't it make sense that Grassley (current chair of finance) would take over the judiciary committee, of which he is also a ranking member. I think Grassley and Specter both were elected in 1980.
