Thirteen cows killed by single lightning bolt...

A single lightning strike is believed to have killed 13 prized dairy cows at Fernvale, west of Brisbane.

Dairy farmer David Potter said he believed the lightning hit a tree the Friesians were under and they were killed in a "chain reaction".

"There was two big claps of thunder and when I went to get the cows, there were 13 of them dead under the tree," Mr Potter said.

"You could see where the lightning had hit the tree. It's just one of them things.

"We've had storms through here before with lightning and never had anything like that happen before.

"I've never heard of anything like this. It's ... just unlucky - unlucky 13."

Mr Potter, who runs a farm of 300 milking cows, said the dead Friesians, all under six years-old, were uninsured.

He said they would cost up to $1000 each to replace.

The cows would have produced about 300 litres of milk a day but Mr Potter said he had no immediate plans to replace them.

Mr Potter said the cows' deaths added more pressure after having to battle drought, increased feed prices and low milk prices.

He said recent showers were welcome but more follow-up rain was needed.

"It doesn't go very far at all, the paddocks are that dry," he said.

"It's turned the grass around now but we need a fair bit more of it."

Lightning is rather dangerous. Never play golf in the rain, unless you are using a 1-iron..., even God can't hit a 1-iron.

And just think: 13 cows with just one lightning bolt. 9 obnoxious democrats all in the same place at one time.

In 1997 I was running a Beef Cattle Ranch for my father, we raised Red Limousine cows. One morning we were out checking our cows after a bad summer storm and we had 3 cows hit by lightning ourselves. It was kind of weird, there was a tree that the limbs kind of split about 2 1/2' up the tree and a cow had her head between the limbs, the bolt of lightning passed through her body and out her backside hitting the two cows standing behind her. They both fell over with their legs sticking straight up like some comedy movie you might see, while I must admit it wasn't very damn funny when 3 of your best brood cows were lying dead. What was weird is that the buzzards wouldn't eat the meat, I guess because it was thouroughly cooked and they didn't want any of that.

I once owned a cow that was struck by lightening. Prior to being struck she was the most conservative cow you would ever want to meet. The lightening didn't kill her but must must have fried her brain because afterwards she turned liberal and refused to give milk but still expected to be fed.... I finally had to put her down.

LOL..
I like it.

It's usually just the opposite, a jolt of some kind (lightning, mugging, etc..) changes 'em from liberal to conservative.

yer cow musta gotten too many volts.

This reminds me of a Funky Winkerbean cartoon. Two characters were out playing golf when a thunderstorm approached. One of the guys wanted to take shelter under a tree and the other guy declined saying a low-lieing area is better. The last panel showed the guy who didn't stay under the tree all bandaged up in a hospital bed with the sound bubble over him saying 'flash flood'. lol

I had a friend who worked on the power company control board in the Modesto area many years ago. A power line fell and he made a mistake and closed the power switch too soon. He executed several cows. I don't remember how many.

He always felt really bad about it. I am sure the farmer was none to happy either :)
