Producers of the widely popular daily radio program "Focus on the Family" have pulled the show from a Columbia, S.C., Christian station after its general manager refused to air an episode he thought was too political.

After airing on WMHK-FM for 24 years, the radio program hosted by author and psychologist Dr. James Dobson has been pulled effective Jan. 2, reports the Columbia State newspaper.

"'Focus on the Family' seems to think the political agenda is intertwined with the spiritual agenda," Jim Marshall, the station's general manager told the daily.

According to the report, a letter was circulated to area listeners by the Focus organization that Marshall says read as if the station canceled the program. It was Focus on the Family, however, that decided to pull the show.

Marshall told the State WMHK had concerns about the show's politically oriented programming "going back about 10 years."

The issue came to a head when Marshall decided not to air the Nov. 12 program, which discussed the soft-porn catalog put out by clothier Abercrombie & Fitch and also covered the controversy over Bush judicial nominees stalled in the U.S. Senate.

Columbia Christians for Life says other shows thought controversial this fall included one addressing the battle waged by Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore over the Ten Commandments and an episode about the legal tug of war over the life of disabled Floridian Terri Schiavo.

Marshall claims shows focusing on public-policy issues make some listeners uncomfortable.

"We want people to feel comfortable listening to the station no matter their political affiliation," he told the paper. "We want to focus more on spiritual issues than political. All of these issues are important, but they'll never be more important than the Gospel message."

Focus' vice president, John Fuller, explained to the Columbia daily why the organization pulled the program.

"Our agreement with stations is that we'll provide programming and they'll air it," Fuller said. "We're not comfortable with stations picking and choosing what they want to air from us. It was our desire to remove the tension and take the daily program off the station."

According to the report, Marshall penned a letter to station listeners addressing the controversy.

"If you've listened to WMHK very long at all, you know we are not shy about speaking out when it's necessary, and we do it in a forum that is much broader than a single syndicated program," Marshall wrote. "We were very vocal about video poker and the state lottery. ... We have been and will continue to be a pro-life ministry. We're concerned about these moral issues, but we've tried to communicate our concerns in a way that does not alienate those who don't know Jesus yet."

"Focus on the Family" will be available in Columbia next year on WYFV-FM. The organization describes itself as a "nonprofit evangelical organization dedicated to the preservation of the home."

With all due respect, the quote is a good one, but I don't see where it's applicable in the context of this article.

God Bless James Dobson......he has been instrumental in changing my family to the good...

...I have listened to him for years, and do doubt the devoted listeners of this particular radio station (that dissed him), will pull out in droves and follow him to the other station.

John,

As a resident of the market in question, many people won't be able to listen now because of the weaker signal on WYFV, and also the 2:30 PM slot puts it up against Rush.

I have more details WND didn't say:

1.. WMHK has a more powerful base which allows it a range of 50-75 miles from the Columbia (SC) market.

2. Fellow CIU station WRCM is the same in the Charlotte (NC) market.

3. Suburban markets cannot receive WYFV, so now we are relegated to the Internet. If you leave the premises of Dixiana, you can't receive

The irony is in the suburb of Orangeburg, the local radio stations were sold and dropped Rush Limbaugh for classic rock, so now I have been stripped of ANOTHER good radio show.

Jim Marshall's calls have clearly been more music less discussion and less teachings. He has put the station on a more liberal slant in recent years by following the "no competition" mentality. He dropped more teachings and dropped a top 20 countdown, AND dropped news on the hour. They can spin it all they want but they will be penalised for being stupid.

I haven't been happy and CIU admitted the contributions have dropped. Good. They should be punished for their antics. Maybe that's why homosexual special rights groups are doing a job in the area -- the station is too complacent.

Mr. Marshall obviously doesn't know the Gospel. The Bible says the Gospel is a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Greeks. Thus the only way Marshall can keep his listeners comfortable and not offend them is to remove the Gospel from his programming.

This is absurd. Focus on The Family has had their hand in the sociopolitical scene for years. Why is this Marshall guy getting cold feet all of a sudden?

Maybe Bobby Chang is right. Maybe Marshall is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

"'Focus on the Family' seems to think the political agenda is intertwined with the spiritual agenda," Jim Marshall, the station's general manager told the daily.

Isn't it?

If spiritual reality has no relevance to temporal reality then there's no point in spending one moments thought on it. We could all just wait until we're dead to deal with it.

They want folks to "be comfortable" with their message

They are pro life but wouldn't allow discussion of Terri Schiavos torture by her husband and the pro death cultists

They wont discuss porn marketed at young people or Judge Roy Moore's Ten Commandment Fight

They have a right to air any programs they want...and Dobson has a right to remove his program

Let the viewers decide ...if they can get the facts straight to make an informed decision that is.

Sounds like they want 'tickle your ears' gospel or are listening to a vocal minority of complainers...who may not even be Christians for all they know...

imo

Looks to me as if WMHK (which stands for Making Him Known), wants to focus on the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Really makes you wonder what Christian Radio is coming to.

Just received this related email from Focus on the Family. If I lived in South Carolina, this radio station would be hearing from me. We need MORE of what Focus is about and not less.

'Focus on the Family' no longer to be aired by 'contemporary Christian'
radio station WMHK in Columbia, S.C.

As a result of a difference in biblical worldview concerning what
programming is appropriate to be carried by 'Focus on the Family'
for airing on WMHK 'contemporary Christian' radio, the 'Focus on the Family'
program will no longer be carried on WMHK after January 2, 2004.

Dispute over the programming content of four 'Focus on the Family'
programs in late October and early November 2003 resulted in WMHK's
refusal to air Dr. James Dobson's November 12 program.

The four programs covered several culturally relevant, current-events
issues, including the courageous stance of (now former) Alabama State
Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore in his attempt to acknowledge God in
the public square by displaying the Ten Commandments; and, the urgent
need for action in Florida to save the life of Terry Schiavo, who
was threatened with death by dehydration and starvation (whose life
has been spared for the moment).

The article below from The State newspaper (Columbia, S.C.) appeared
December 11, on the front page of the Metro Section.

A November 24 letter from Focus on the Family had been sent to supporters
in the listening areas of WMHK in Columbia, S.C. and sister station WRCM
in Charlotte, N.C., and a December 1 letter from Jim Marshall, the WMHK
General Manager, had apparently been prepared to answer inquiries into
the matter.

‘Focus on the Family’ leaving WMHK radio

By CHRISTINA LEE KNAUSS
Staff Writer

“Focus on the Family,” the popular radio show by conservative Christian
author and broadcaster James Dobson, will no longer air on Columbia’s
WMHK-FM (89.7) as of Jan. 2.

The reason for the change, said Jim Marshall, general manager of the
popular Christian music station, is that the station and “Focus on the
Family” disagreed over the political slant of some recent shows.

“‘Focus on the Family’ seems to think the political agenda is intertwined
with the spiritual agenda,” Marshall said.

Concerned listeners circulated a copy of a letter from Focus on the
Family’s vice president, John Fuller, at local churches and asked people
to call WMHK. Marshall said the letter, sent to people on the show’s
mailing list, read as if the radio station canceled the program.

Instead, Marshall said, “Focus on the Family” officials pulled the show
from WMHK when station management said it did not want to run what it
thought were politically slanted segments.

Marshall said WMHK had concerns about the show’s politically oriented
programming “going back about 10 years.”

These concerns came to a head in late October and early November,
culminating with a Nov. 12 program that WMHK did not air. That program,
which dealt with allegedly pornographic ads by clothing retailer
Abercrombie & Fitch, also featured a lengthy discussion of the
Republican filibuster in the Senate over accusations that Democrats
were deliberately blocking President Bush’s nominees for federal courts.

“Focus” aired views supporting the filibuster. This type of thing,
Marshall said, makes some listeners uncomfortable.

“We want people to feel comfortable listening to the station no matter
their political affiliation,” he said. “We want to focus more on
spiritual issues than political. All of these issues are important,
but they’ll never be more important than the Gospel message.”

Fuller, meanwhile, said Dobson was simply speaking out in favor of
judges “who can be sympathetic toward families and Christian values.”

“Our agreement with stations is that we’ll provide programming and
they’ll air it,” Fuller said. “We’re not comfortable with stations
picking and choosing what they want to air from us. It was our desire
to remove the tension and take the daily program off the station.”

Marshall has written his own letter to send to concerned listeners,
explaining the station’s side of the story. In it, he stresses the
station’s commitment to promoting Christian values.

“If you’ve listened to WMHK very long at all, you know we are not shy
about speaking out when it’s necessary, and we do it in a forum that
is much broader than a single syndicated program,” Marshall wrote.
“We were very vocal about video poker and the state lottery ... We
have been and will continue to be a pro-life ministry. We’re concerned
about these moral issues, but we’ve tried to communicate our concerns
in a way that does not alienate those who don’t know Jesus yet.”

WMHK has run the “Focus on the Family” program for 24 years. It airs
at 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

After Jan. 2, Columbia area listeners can pick up the show on
WYFV-FM (88.7), operated by the Bible Broadcasting Network. Listeners
also can hear current and past “Focus on the Family” broadcasts at the
organization’s Web site, www.family.org.
