I Believe I Just Witnessed Attempted Voter Registration Fraud

Today as I was leaving my local grocery store a woman was standing at the exit doors holding a clipboard with a Dennis Kucinich sticker on it. She stated she was representing Dennis Kucinich and was asking people who were leaving the store if they were registered to vote. She stated she was registering voters.

I was very pressed for time at the particular moment as I was late for an appointment and unfortunately felt that I couldn't stop to speak with her or confront her then and there. After my appointment, about 30 minutes later I returned to the store. The woman was gone. I spoke with the store manager Mr. ***** who confirmed he had asked her to leave as that activity was against store policy inside the store. He stated that other customers had reported the woman to the customer service desk which was how he was alerted to her presence. Mr. ****** relayed that the woman stated she had been to several various stores in the area this morning trying to register voters for Kucinich and had most likely been turned out of all of them.

Interestingly the store manager indicated that store policy would have no problem with this woman standing out on their sidewalk, i.e. a public place, to conduct this activity, "like the Boy Scouts selling candy". I pointed out that there was no comparison in the two activities and that voter registration required verification of citizenship and age and needed to be done by state or county officials. (sheesh!)

Unfortunately Mr. ***** didn't get the womans name. He was a bit flustered, trying to cover his butt and wanting to make sure I wasn't mad at him or the store. I made sure I remained positive and pleasant throughout.

When I told him that the woman was registering voters for Kucinich he said, "I don't even know who Kucinich is?" I had to tell him. A fine example of the voting populace.....

This is a no brainer covert freep in the making, plus you can may nab the culprit for fraud...

Simply find out who is in charge of the Kucinich campaign in your local area. Call that person. Describe the persons activities and tell them you would like to get involved, and volunteer to 'register' voters.

Throw them some bait; let them know you have a revenous pack of liberal friends who are un-registered...etc etc.

When your recruited, ask leading questions concerning their practices.

From their you can then attempt to document the fraud if any exists, or simply inform the Kucinch drone that you are actually a conservative, and that a recollected transcript of the phone conversation or meeting would be sent to the D.A. and the registrar of voters.

They will think twice about such practices I promise.

What if this women wasn't really trying to get voters to register and was using it as an excuse to steal people's identification ?

My point being .. it's one this to sell candy and it's another to get people's personal information

In California, anyone can register voters... no proof of age or citizenship is required when you register - just a Driver's License number

Geeeesh! Have times changed. California was the first place I was ever registered to vote. My husband and I had to call the County and find out the name of a "registrar" in our district. Registrars were "party" people, and I had to find one of my party, phone him, go to his ouse, and sign the papers. We voted in the next election only to be notified later that our registration was in error and we were ineligible because we had not been residents for a whole year. Later on that year (1960) they passed a federal law that allowed us to vote in the Presidential election only if we had be eligible to vote in the state where we had previously resided.

I've forgotten how I managed to change my registration when I moved to a different city -- probably during a drive at the grocery store -- but when I wanted to change parties, we had to go through the same process. We had to find the neighborhood "registrar" for the new party and change our registration. This was done at my kitchen table this time.

Of corse, I neglected to mention that we had to be TWENTY ONE, which is the age I still thin should be mandatory for voting.

Another thing I neglected to mention is that I now live in a state where you can sign up at the polls (no 30 day, 60 day, 6 month, or one year residency required) and need to bring nothing more as proof of citizenship, age, or residency than a utility bill (or other piece of mail) in your name delivered to an address within the district. They cannot ask for any ID and cannot ask if you are a felon. It's a disgrace.

After every election when the County mails out cards to the new voters it is discovered that there are always lots of them that are addressed to vacant lots, church basements, and other bogus abodes.

Another IL Freeper (Maybe election official?) has weighed in that this woman should NOT have been doing what she was doing. I'm hoping that by clicking on "Illinois", if you are interested, you can see the posts that I've received on this. The latest Freeper lists those people who are automatically made regristrars, who can be appointed etc. I don't want to re-post his/her words though, without permission.

Bottom line for me: I'm going to get more information as is suggested and know for sure what is OK and what isn't. If there is a line being crossed again, I intend to know it.

Here's one for you. Last election cycle in Fresno CA, hubby and I were registering voters at a Costco. Our sign says "Republicans Register Here" and stuff like that. Moved? Changed your Name? Want to change parties? Register here!

Anyway, these two Lesbians came up and wanted to register to vote so I gave them the forms and they filled them out but then I noticed they were both democrats. So I said, "Here you go, you can drop these in the mail yourselves; as you can see, we are registering Republicans here."

The two made a big stink and said they insisted that I send their voter registration forms in for them which I did, but it goes to show how small some people can be. By the way, I noticed they both had forgotten to check the little box about being a citizen so maybe their forms got rejected. One can only hope.

Here in CA it's another ballgame when it comes to voter registration.

The woman in the store was off the wall. You can't register voters to vote for a particular candidate!

I'm personally registered to sign-up voters here in Denton County, Texas; what that woman was doing would be perfectly legal (if pointless!) here.

What we do is wear a 'T'-shirt with a big "Republican Party" logo, and go door-to-door; the Dims turn us away w/o even listening to what we have to say, so if someone DOES NOT turn us away outright, we ask them if they're registered to vote!

Just curious if your tee shirt had "vote Bush" on it and you were asking to register voters on behalf of Bush, would that be OK? IL Freepers who are Deputy Registrars say it isn't OK here.

I was also concerned about whether she was registering people at all. And whether she was a bona fide Deputy Registrar. Or, as someone suggested, creating a Kucinich supporter list or gathering personal info for nepharious (sp) purposes.

I don't think these people actually REGISTER the voters .. the local Registrar would do that. I think these folks get the signatures and the official takes over from there. That is the person who has to verify the info. BUT it's more names for Kucinich's mailing lists. OR she could have been collecting signatures to get his name on the ballot, which also would have to be verified by the Registrar in your voting district.

I don't know if it's illegal, but I know that some of the grocery store chains have rules against this kind of thing if it's right at the doors or inside the store.

It also says, very clearly, that forms can be mailed. It doesn't say that YOU have to mail them, or that you can only send one.

If someone is dedicated enough to go collect forms and mail them in for people, more power to them.

Now we just need to get our side to collect more likely voters than their side.
